I like the idea of only allowing a couple of pilot kits per player per round. It would not only make pilots more careful and more likely to bail, but would also prevent people who can't fly from repeatedly killing their teammates by trying.
I also think it would be cool (if possible) if insurgents/mec/pla could get a ticket bonus by 'capturing' the crashed aircraft (for technology, or just as a trophy of war), whilst the USMC have to try to destroy the thing in the field with explosives, just like in real life.
what would happen if you picked up another kit. I mean if I was a piolet behind enemy lines your damn straight I am going to pick up the first kit I see laying around so I have a much better weapon. Now I am no longer a piolet and not worth the trouble of rescuing.
If a pilot could only get 2 pilot kits per round then there's an incentive not to ditch your kit if you aren't going to be able to get another. This is particularly true if, say, you are in a good teamply game and your team is relying on you as their only transport pilot.

i actually like the first idea, sounds like it could work
get hit, start losing control (still going at same speed) bail out just bfore jet hurtles to the ground, then the fight begins: awesome

About the pilot limiting kit thing, although it's not a bad idea, it wouldn't be a good solution, it would work though. Here is why, what if the newest pilots get a hold if them? They crash the plane and forget that the 'E' button is there to keep you alive. Make it 1 per person, or 2 per person. THAT would enforce pilots to bail out a lot more than limiting the kits. It will eliminate the rookie pilots first and leave the experienced pilots there. Or limit the kits like you suggested, and if a rookie bails out a few minutes after he takes off, it proves he's not ready to fly, and the admins either tell him to commit suicide (no penalty of course) and give his kit to a more experienced pilot or be booted from the server, his choice.

I've "crash landed" an A-10 before on Al Basrah. It just started losing altitude and I couldn't do anything, and I landed right near NVCP, and got out.
This should happen more often. Being actually shot down, as opposed to just exploding in the air. The difference in the amount of damage you can take before you lose controls and when you explode should be increased. Right now there's a fine line between losing controls and explosion. Losing control and crashing, and maybe THEN blowing up, should be a lot more common than just exploding in the air.

"a couple of pilot kits per player per round" is precisely what I said.

Viking i understand that it would probably be abused on some servers or teams but with the direction that PR is going, the more teamwork oriented and serious players are the ones who are going to be here in the long run.
Yoganator I like your idea too, this would make it so that if you really sucked at flying then yea you wouldnt be around in planes for very long. If all your best pilots are dead then you would be forced to use your reserve pilots who might not be so great.
Of course you would have to lock the pilot kit once they pick it up so that it couldnt be traded to someone else but i like the idea.
*edit* sorry i guess it was ubiquitous' idea

Yeah, the same thing happened with a Cobra before too. Both the co-pilot and I survived (we were shot down right north of the Village), as did the Cobra. It wasn't even that damaged, but could not take off. Eventually an APC came and a crewman repaired it enough to at least allow it to be flown back to airport.

Oh in our small public playing tourney group we often see or experience those moments.
-Recovering downed pilots spontaneously (nearly done, as i as gunner in cobra with pistol bravely fight off an insurgent squad with a pistol, (no i didn't get them all)

The pilot took a hit on a damaged cobra through the cockpit with a RPG, gunner survived and the copter (sort-of) autorotated into the street in Albasrah.
-Survivable helicopter wrecks... sometimes Ambushing copters with deceptive AAA and SAM tactics.. often
