Yep, Devfile is no more. They had hoped that the server would generate a lot of forum traffic at devfile.com, and they were going to support their server with banners I guess. But that never happened, so they have to shut down.

The thing is server lag was extremely high and people just got tired of being lagged out by the server.
Of course its the map. But Ive played numerous 64 player basrah on other servers chock full and didn't have lag at all.
Thats why I stopped playing on it.

Think, Devfile server costed $700 per month or so..
Well, only thing, that the server brought in, was a lot of lag issues and a pile of banned smacktards...

I know nothing about servers: who pays for the cost of servers then?
Is there any advertising or what.
I DO KNOW DONATIONS PLAY A ROLE - but to what extent i know not.

Most of it was sponsored and a sponsorship is a two way street. We weren't generating enough traffic to our websites which in turn meant we weren't getting hits for hypernia.
Wow that first part actually sounded... smart
The thing that killed us was when we went down for a week, everyone went to TB

In the whole time I played on the server (since it went up

) I have been lagged out maybe once and gotten bad lag a handful of times over the what 3-6 months?

Well it is true guys, the reality is that the server was part of the website and the website kept hitting a glass ceiling of success that we were never gonna pass... Basicly it got old on my side, and I owed it to hypernia to not have to keep providing service for a crappy website.
Sorry for the inconvience, but theres plenty of other good servers that you guys should try.
And thanks again for the support youve given Myself and devfile, but it wont be needed anymore...

Coudl we just not hit that website and get the server to crash with massive number of hits..........i mean i would be willing to do that like 3 times a week to 4or 5 rnadom PR server websites!

but its to late now
So do you think the sponsoring company lost lots of money, just 1 server - 700 quid amonth, and the Devfile website generated over 700 quids worth of revenue indirectly through peeps seeing adverts and going off to buy some random **** (i know it could never be measured and hits are the only real way, but i would have loved to know how many hits per 1quid generated - getting to much into economics but HAY - THATS LIFE)
i now feel sorry for DEvfile, Hypernia and the Tourney = all ineed of money badly but then again we alll our, so i should feel really shity for all the others, but then again ....O GOD, ARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGg *slams face into well rounded face dent in desk from periousl slammings*

Desert Fox notice you have a high end system. When the server hiccuped the slightest bit, us guys with low processors (celeron 2.4) and low fps and settings felt it max. You max guys however, your computer plows through it.
Low end systems along with low fps get server lag hits and suffer through it.

How do you know its the server though? It could be the lightmaps?
I believe it was Rhino or Eggman who said that the lightmaps being set on high were what was causing basrah to lag.

Define "lag". Do you mean
-where it says "you've got a connection problem"
-where you suffer a bad frame rate, or
-where you start jerking forward and then backward again really fast?
I didn't get the first kind on DevFile any more than on other servers. The second kind is purely to do with your system, and though I've got a shitty comp, I just keep the settings on low/off (with medium textures and geometry), and it works out fine. The third kind I got in the early days of DevFile, but none in the last few months.

I run a "mostly basrah" server now from my house, but I've yet to get anywhere near maxing it out player wise. I wonder what it would do if it was full. The hardware is decent, but not cutting edge by any means.
PointBlankGaming:Mostly Basrah
Im not in here to plug my server (i dont make/lose any money if its empty or full) just maybe offering an alternative for people if they want Al Basrah all the time now that Devfile is leaving.
Currently, it runs the full map(64) with 34 available player slots.

while i hate to see any server taken down, i am a little happy about the 24/7 basrah server going away. give the other maps a little love! there are a number of bad *** PR maps, and it's a shame to only play one.
after many weeks of troubleshooting (which included a complete switch from windows to linux), we have finally got our server up for good! it's called STRIKETEAM ABR/PROS, and is located in dallas, texas. we jumped through a lot of hoops to get our server running ABR, and we'd love to see you devfile guys heading our way! check our server out.
desertfox...thanks for running a good server for all these months (especially considering the amount of douchebags you had to deal with).
