'[R-MOD wrote:DukeMeister']well, dont count on this but.....
The devs have recently discovered how to zero rifles (all the 0.6 beta rifles are zeroed to differing ranges), and this means its possible to change the drop of the rifle on the fly, which means you can select bullet drop through say the inventory screen, which means you MIGHT be able to adjust the 'elevation' on the sniper crosshairs to account for different ranges ...... maybe
Maybe being the key word. T'was I who zeroed the rifles in the beta, that's right....sound isn't my only forte. However, bullet drop (like everything in BF2) is a linear decline. Unlike in real life where the bullet arches upwards and the dips down into it's target. We can't change the bullet travel path and thus, it would make no sense to incorporate adjustable sights because there would be no point in zeroing your rifle to shorter ranges.

Anti-personnel makes the perfect sniper buddy.
AP Rifleman is no more in 0.6 dude
Well, this whole zeroing process could be reversed and used to sight in for longer ranges where the bullets are hitting lower than where you aim.
Or, if you're just going to forget that whole zeroing business... Vertical Notches?
I don't care if all the sniper rifles use the same scope graphic as a place holder until they can be custom made for every rifle, I just want my damn vertical notches!!!

US Sniper rifles have pseudo-mildots, don't they? Of course, it'd be awesome if the mildots were actual mildots so that you could use them for range estimation (along with the Russian-style put-me-between-two-lines markings on scopes). Sniper rifles in this game should generally come with realistic scopes, and not just anything that devs come up with...
As to adjustable sights, would it be possible to somehow allow the player to move the scope down the screen? What I mean is, for range 0, the scope stays in the middle of the player's screen, but for other ranges, the scope is moved down a bit, so that the crosshairs don't meet in the middle of the screen, but a bit below. The weapon would still fire in the middle of the screen, but you could place the crosshair somewhere below to simulate adjusting the scope for drop.

Well, i guess they could have a spotter as a pickup kit. And it could only be requested if you were in the same squad as the sniper or something like that. And of course limited to the number of snipers on the map.
Spotter
Ghillie suit
Rifle - M4 Acog
Spotter scope - Leupold Mark 4 12-40x60mm
Smoke - M18
Smoke - m18 Color red for extraction
Regarding the zeroing, great stuff. I mean that would even be usefull on the ironsights...

Spotters have been suggested and shot down a bit if I remember. The main argument is that is another gun off the main line and out in the middle of no where helping someone else whore points.
I say give the Spec Ops back the SOFLAM! I'm sure people don't want that since it now works as a Laser Painter for CAS aircraft and their LGBs, which I think the Spec Ops should have access to, but if people are so against that, then give the Spec Ops something like it, no Painter, just Ranger Finder.

Well, u might be right Zander. I have a vague recollection of it aswell. Anywho, i wasn't promoting it. I was just pointing out the fact of realism. However as we all know realism and gameplay doesn't always see eye to eye

.
As a last note:
PR is definitely one of the best sniper arenas out there. That's why so many players fight over the rifles. I just wish they made it
H-A-R-D as hell to use em' . That would prolly limit the snipers to a chosen few so that we groundpounders could actually find any use of em' .

Practice practice practice!, the bullet is drop is real easy in this game.
If you master bullet fall and target leading with the sniper. Plus with the new view ranges in 0.6 you will be decimating all enemy troops in huge areas from the right covering posistions. Theres no need to make changes like range charts or whatever so anyone can pick up a sniper and automatically be a Carl Hathcock

Jaymz, the linear nature of the bullet drop is not all bad. USMC "zero's" their rifles to 200 yards. Between 0 and 200 the bullet starts 2 inches low, rises 2 inches high, and is spot on at 200yrds. Anything less than 250yrds is within 2 inches of your aim point, close enough for grunt work. You only adjust your sights for targets at and beyond 300. M-16A2 sights go up to 800yrds.
Which leads me to another possibility, since this is "reality mod" what about setting up a single player rifle range (al la AA)? You could use the unlock feature to allow people to have more accurate rifles, which would be skinned the same (ie, USMC gets an M-16 with less deviation and a better zero). I know it would be a strech given the hard coding, but if we take Reality to the limits...
Royalwolf, that would be MSgt. Carlos Hathcock to you (unless you knew him personally, in which case I bow down to you and I am not worthy of being in your presence
And Jaymz, what's up with that? You got time to zero rifles but no be in the tourny? LOL! And I love the sounds you've got in there! Rifles sound much better than .5 and that GB APC sounds extremely sweet.

Actually, I think that would be
GunnerySgt Carlos Hathcock,

a rank to which he was promoted (I believe) after retirement. And I, too, would bow down to anyone who had the honor of meeting him.
Back on topic, while zeroing might be a great feature, I'd settle for a working mil-dot system and some type of chart for bullet drop.
The spotter idea is good, too. Sure, people complain that it'd take another gun off the front lines, but then people complain that snipers are lone wolves anyways.
To be honest (and I know some people will hate this), I wouldn't care too much if the sniper/marksman kits were scrapped altogether (even though I love M14s!).

I could have sworn that Long Trang had gotten a posthumous promotion to Msgt, but I be danged if I can find a reference to it. But you're right, he was a Gunny at the time of his discharge. Perhaps it was his son that made Msgt?

Ironically, there are more snipers and marksmen on the battlefield today than at any time in history. Every platoon now has a dedicated marksman who uses the M-21 kit, and Snipers are all over Iraq and Afganistan. In that enviroment accurate counter sniper work is essential.

The "rebirth" of the M14/M21 has a lot to do with the M16/5.56s ballistic defficiencies at long ranges and penetration. The 5.56's "leathality" depends a lot on a small velocity envelop, which drops sharply past 100 yds for the M4 and 300 yds for the M16 (it'd be great if this could be incorporated in-game!).
My biggest gripe with in-game DMs is that they're NEVER used properly (i.e. closely supporting the squad). Instead, they're used as a semi-auto sniper kit. It'd be nice when your squad gets pinned down by an enemy sniper to have a DM close by.
Back on topic: Please get a working mil-dot system and reference "index card" (or whatever) for those future super-far distances!
