But landmines and C4 don't look like rocks... it would be ok for the IED i suppose, except that any rock which was drawn before the others would be an IED
You need some way of changing the 'normal' model to the concealed one to make it anyway realistic. Which is why the invisible method was suggested.

'[R-DEV wrote:Eddie Baker']"Invisible" mines and IEDs have been suggested before, but this way of doing it has never, to my knowledge, been suggested.
Very interesting. I hope a coder can tell you if this is possible.
I believe that even if its possible, its not a good idea. Invisible mines would begin to cause a lot of accidental TKs for which people will start to punish and kick other players indiscriminately imo..

ppl don't recognize the mines as it is now anyway
maybe a small sign on the minimap would help?

Cick and Hold ? Simulating setting it up instead of throwing it on the ground?

To expand on what Jay suggested you could have two selectable mines in your kit. One would be the same as now. The second would be like Jay said a very small model, very hard to see, just the tip if you will

The second one would have a 20 second delay to place it to simulate the time required to hide it.

It'd be fine for the IED's though.

now your just mad the cats out of the bag that it isnt your idea. I already said good idea. Maybe if you had said "like i saw in another thread" then there wouldn't have been an issue.

How about C4 + under a rock.
I saw those IED videos where they put bomb shells inside of dead animals as roadside explosions.

very intresting idea

well the teammates of the invisible mine should still get a red skull and cross bones (like someone just said before). And the enemy would still get the red warning symbol at the corner of the screen so not totally overpowered.
So you would know there is a mine in the vicinity but not exactly. Thats what i think should be like.
Thing is though can you change the properties of an object like a mine once it been put down?
I said in that rubbish thread about using the shovel like the wrench but it does something different to remove it. What i was thinking was it removes the graphics but leaves the explody bit still on the map. Along with the relevant warning symbols.

I'd rather not this.

Well in reality the invaders shouldn't know the where abouts of the IED. How about a minesweeper as a counterweapon of the invisible IED, then with that kit you would see the red skull.

or in a dead cat or what ever, i just think that ieds should always be hidden so they should be camoflaged as ordinary objects.
but seriously it could be done i mean the resistance used fake rocks in ww2 full of explosive to blow up rails to distrupt trains with supplies... i dont see how hard it would be for an insurgent to go to arts and crafts lessons and make one of theose paper + pva glue fake rocks things. (and stuff it with c4)

The rock, plastic bag, etc. etc. idea wouldnt work very well imo.
Firstly I dont think there is enough debris for it to blend in.
I also think that people would soon recognise these objects easily. But could i suppose you could put enough of the same model all around the map so wont stand out like a sore thumb. But thats just more work for someone to do on the map.
Digging down mines

I accidentally opened a new thread on the same topic in spite of having used the search first. It does have some new ideas, though. Here it comes:
Now that the engineer has a shovel it was only a matter of time before somebody would make the connection: Allow engineers to dig down mines!
Before there is a furious outcry: no, the mines would not become completely burried and invisible. They would be considerably harder to spot than the extremely obvious ones we have now but still entirely possible to avoid - but only as long as the driver does his job and keeps an eye on the road. No more spotting mines from miles away!
Also, the ability to dig down mines does certainly not come for free: It takes a while to burry them and meanwhile you are totally exposed, just like when healing a teammate. Also, it is no longer possible to put mines on/near enemy vehicles. Seriously, this is just cheesy and may belong in vanilla BF2 but certainly not PR. Instead, the engineer gets an extra pack of C4 to compensate.
If you feel mines are still made too powerful, there are also the options of making mines harmless until burried and/or creating a lengthy delay before they become active. If you like this idea and choose to use it you should also consider whether riflemen should be able to dig down the engineer's mines, too.
I really think this idea has its merits - better realism and fun!

I guess that's hardcoded.
You can't really dig holes and stuff with the BF2 engine.
(In BF42 you could just stomp the mines into the ground, but even that doesnt work anymore.)

I do not really care about the details on how it is done. I leave that up to the developers to find out. The transparency sounds like a good solution, and I also heard shrinking the mines mentioned.

Maybe instead of making them completely invisible they just kinda show up as a little piece of rubble or something at least far more subtle than the existing one...yet noticable if you walk near it.

-Having been a Combat Engineer I can tell you that it takes at least 10 minutes to bury a mine and it will be blatantly obvious for at least two days due to the different soil color. And if you want to get really, really, really frustrated, try burying a mine when the ground is frozen... So, there should be an extensive time delay for concealing the mine(In PR terms) and it should still be obvious to those on the lookout. Can you block concealment on paved roads and such(I doubt it but I must ask)? Maybe you could make the mine graphic turn into a small dirt bump or something.
