Maybe it's been overused because this stupid minimap debate has been brought up again and again?

You press M and your WHOLE screen is dominated by a map. Then you get shot cos you can't see a thing. And some other poster was pissing and moaning that the minimap takes up a fraction of his screen?
The 'M' map isn't the same as you scanning the area trying to found out where someone is pointing. The minimap does a better job at that since you know the general direction.

Locking it to it's highest zoom level seems like the best compromise and perhaps the easiest to implement.

agreed. you code it, i'll sneak it into .6 full release.

really people need to stop whining about the map. yeah, you cant see in a game as well as in real life. tough. move your mouse to the side to see. sorryz. i understand its a bit hard for squad work, but you know, tell each member to take a direction and trust them. if you hear shooting to one side, its probably on that side.

IRL someone doesnt just spot an enemy and you can look and see without locating him in the brush yourself. If anything, that needs changing along with some map change. spotting shouldnt be exact, it should be general area, like, whereever their cursor was, no more showing the enemy and his direction/movement. Its anooying how spotting is used to identify friendlies, USE THE BIG MAP!!! spotting is useless if half of the spottings arent threats! its like that friggin story about the boy cryin' wolf... right?? right???

reality. remove the minimap or make it fully zoomed.

full throttle towards reality, hold on or go to the kiddy table AKA Vanilla BF2.

...I'm in a bad mood... is that obvious? :) saying all this made me feel better though... if that makes you guys any happier...

Exactly.

You SHOULDN'T be able to see a target and instantly engage it because you see a dot on your map at all times.

Friendly fire happens in real life for a reason.

You still see targets and friendlies using the "M" map. You still see boundaries. You can set the transparency for the "M" map and EASILY fly having it open the whole time. On Al Basrah I used to fly the A-10 with it open to see targets on the whole map and navigate easily and the only time I would close it was when I knew exactly where I was headed.

For fuck's sake people do NOT read on these forums.

*sighs* Yeah..we all read the forums...

http://realitymod.com/forum/t8945-shoul ... nimap.html

The community's divided on this obviously and since it's been going on for over a year and the mini-maps not removed I think it's not going to be removed. The OP 'compromise' isn't really a compromise since you stated to 'remove' the minimap.
The 'compromise' would be to lock it as someone suggested. Since that's still keeping a limited mini-map, just limiting it severly, no one is going to be happy so maybe it's time to drop this.

Simple as that. Won't take but 1 second.
Yes, And even with the transparency at 100% the player icons are still there.

That could also be a good compromise. It would simulate what a soldier knows is going on around him. In real life he would know whats going on around his close vicinity. Maybe the DEVs could increase the resolution in the highest zoom though?

I think locking the minimap at a set zoom would be a good compromise. You would still need your tactical map but be aware of your squad mates for the most part.

In a perfect BF2 world it would be nice to only see your own squad on the mini map and the rest of the team on the tactical map. Only enemy sighted by your squad on your mini map, the team spotted on the tactical map. But I fear the word Hard-coded could be used in responce to this

I have a lower end rig and at a distance I can't tell the difference because the gear doesn't show up.
I just don't shoot unless the minimap shows it empty of blue dots and without the minimap I would die more often.
But since I don't think the Dev's have lost sight of anything I would play even with no maps at all.
For a 4th time, any one agree or know if an increase in the draw distance on weapons and gear is possible on infantry?

Removing the minimap sounds at first like an intriguing idea. Then you consider the fact that working together would be simply impossible that way if not everybody has VOIP. In short: Bad idea.

The mini-map is strange. It would be nice if remove it. But, if a soldier need to see what is going on the battlefield, he should take cover, get his map out of his pocket (press "M"), check it and then put it back (pressing "M") again. So simple ! A more cleaned view is always wellcome.

-I still say lock it at max zoom, it simulates the senses you would usually have on the battlefield. You know when you can sense where people are around you without looking around, especially when covering, things like that is what the minimap is there for, though you only need max zoom for that. Most of the people opposing a minimap here at all think it's meant to be taken as an actual map welded onto your retina or something, what it does is it simulates something that you can't recreate in a computer game.

-Here's an experiment; place a small object(pen, fridge magnet, etc) somewhere within your reach, then turn around so that you can't see it anymore. Now, either grab it without turning if you are positioned or close your eyes and grab for it. Better yet, put it under a table and guess where it would be if it was on top of the table. That was easy, huh? That's because your brain creates a virtual map of your surroundings, 360 degrees, extremely accurate. This is what the minimap simulates since your brain can't make a virtual map of the game area as it can't gauge distance, height, width, weight(Yup, the brain actually calculates what things will weigh before you pick them up.), etc. Am I getting through to any of you?

EDIT: Another experiment; visualize an object you have in another room, see how well the actual area corresponds with your virtual map, see how accurately you can pinpoint an individual object from where you're sitting, even try walking there with your eyes closed, many people are able to do that. Do you understand the power and impact of the human brain when present on the battlefield? This is what the minimap (poorly) simulates. It's nowhere near as good as your brain but it's alot better than flapping around in the dark.

Locking the minimap at max zoom is a great idea, I am all for it. It makes for a good compromise between removing the minimap and the awareness of your local surroundings you would realistically have. A maxed zoomed minimap is more realistic than having none.

Bubba, you make a good point about the 'little green markers'. I had not thought of them since I play with the 3D-map disabled and rely on the minimap for local awareness. The key problem I see with relying only on the markers is if people do not have VOIP: In real life you can shout to each other. You cannot do that in the game. The markers only tell you in what direction your squadmates are, not what they are doing.

I just had an interesting idea myself, though: How about removing the maps (not minimap) for anyone but the squad leader? The squad members do not need a map since all they are supposed to do is stick with the squad leader. Maps are for decision-making and squad members do [should!] not make decisions. However, I think this is a suggestion that warrants its own topic. I have opened a topic about it here: https://www.realitymod.com/forum/showth ... post392992

It's pretty obvious that those are the super secret, oft implied but never confirmed, PR green fairys  You my friend should consider yourself lucky to have been able to capture them on screen like that

I play with the minimap at full transparency anyway just like any self-respecting PR player should. Playing with magic radar is just cheating imo

Your suggestion is good but your examples are pretty worse.

What has that to do with the minimap that show you the postion of all your teammates? Can you feel the people that are around you? And no, they don't stay on the same place all the time .

Your ingame soldier is not blind or deaf. You can see them and you can hear them.
