I'm no DEV, but I'm guessing it's one of those things that is either ON or OFF.

no, the contrails show up when the aircraft makes sharp turns.

I live near an active Naval Air Base where military jets are flying near here alot, and I never see these trails. Granted, they aren't going full speed, but it seems as if the trails in BF are a bit exaggerated. If you watch that youtube video that someone posted earlier in this thread, you'll see that the trails are rather short and last for a very short amount of time compared to those in BF.
Actually, contrails can stretch for hundreds of kilometres.

Check this out (near the very end of the video).

I would assume its a video of jets flying low, well there is no way you would fly that low during combat.

At higher altitudes, where air temperature is low, yes. Not at lower altitudes, though. If you can't get a cirrus cloud going at the altitude, you won't be able to see long-lasting contrails.

What about the Swiss jets ?
Even though they look like they are low aren't they thousands of feet above sea level in that video ?
BTW. I love that song and even the gf thought the vid was impressive.

and by the way since we don't have any radar or different views to see where the enemy planes are then we need this as a way of seeing where they are.
Yea! I was thinking maybe they should be longer so you can find another plane or evidence of its existence on maps like Karshan.

Well yeah, obviously, but we aren't using those types of altitudes in PR.

You obviously didn't read the quote.

I love watching them drift across the sky and finally break up.

A few weeks ago I saw an F-15(and brief F-1 8) demonstration at an air show.

Vapor trails even at low altitudes were very visible when that F-15 would do any sort of abrupt movement. Admittedly they weren't as constant as the ones in the game, but that's just the effect of anything you will get in a game.

Having seen these jets in person doing maneuvers at low altitudes, I can vouch that the vapor trails are very much realistic and should be kept in.

This is something I always wondered about before, but after seeing it myself I now believe it.

And yet again, I still don't know what he wanted me to read that I didn't already...

Bobert08: Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe that we are talking about the wingtip trails formed during maouvers. (which is realistic but irrelevant unless i''m mistaken)

HellDuke: The Contrails that the op was talking about (not the wingtip ones) generally occur abover 26,000 feet where the temperature is below 40 degrees Celcuis. Though wing design may affect this a bit, it won't effect it enough to be present in the altitudes found in BF2.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
For those that don't know the difference between the wingtip contrails and the normal contrails, wingtip contrails are caused by a drop in pressure and usually occur at high altitude. If they are lower, it is because of sharp manouvers. Normal contrails are caused by engine exhaust and only occur at high altitude and at extremely low temperatures.

My arguement supports keeping wingtip contrails but getting rid of engine contrails.

To set the record straight, I am not referring to the contrails formed by excessive altitudes. Heck, those aren't even in-game, so why would I be making a suggestion to remove something in game? I'm referring to the ones that are made by the sudden drop of pressure by the wingtips when the plane makes a sharp turn. I even posted a screenshot to clarify this...
HellDuke wrote:I think you didn't read the part where someone said he live by an air base.
What he quoted was what I wrote, so of course I read it, considering I'm the one who wrote it. ;)

Anyways, I just though that the in-game trails were a bit exaggerated, but if they are really that realistic, forgive me.../thread
