Transport cannot be a consideration when designing player movement speeds, that's a map consideration. And there are LOTS of ways to get transport in v0.6, particularly on large maps:
- vehicle drops
- bunkers produce a vehicle every 10 minutes
- firebases produce a vehicle every 10 minutes (might be bugged atm)
.. not to mention the vehicles placed by the map designer.
==
I am not aware of any way to get a "3rd gear" .. technically a 5th gear because movement speed definitions are:
- crawl
- crouch
- walk
- run
It's not possible to add a 5th gear. So the current movement speeds are a compromise between tactical movement speeds and a good cross country trot speed.
Soldiers are trained to NOT sprint. "Trot" is how I am aware they are trained. Having said that, I am sure that when it all goes to hell, yer gonna sprint across a street or the like.. but what we have now is a compromise that, within the engine limitations, gives us a much more tactically realistic movement speed than the previous speeds.
If we could I'd love a 3 to 5 second burst of sprint speed over and above the trot speed, but as noted I dunno how to do this with BF2 (and am 99% sure it's not possible).
With every release of PR we are looking for ways to slow the pace from vBF2 frenzy and I think this recent player movement speed is one of the best changes we have made. Not everybody will like it, but c'est la vie.

are you guys talking about the new beta or the actual 0.6 release because there's nothing about the new release in the news section? just checking
I also mainly use sprint for long distances on map, mostly because there are hardly any normal jeeps avail and only APCs or there's hardly anyone spawning where i am so i just go on foot (less dangerous)
though everyone will get the benefit from slower speeds at some point and it should make the game more tactical. I haven't tried them out myself yet so dunno how it handles.

Fantastic it was one of the points I hated. I’d rather have distance with a nice pace that lightning for 5 seconds then stop.
In 05 and I’ve not played anything above, My mother at 60+ could run further and she has a doggy hip. It was like Run stop Run stop Run stop. And al the time I was thinking for god’s sake all I want is to have a bit of distance or time added.
0.5 I think you ran 40 yards if you were lucky when IRL I can run for about 30-40 mins at a nice pace but sprint I’ll do 200-400 yards then pack up lol…
Great this has been addressed.
As for the guy who said
"Walk, Trot and Dash"
Surly you could go from walking to dash for the first 15 secs then this trot if you continue, just not that stop of old.....

Id much rather have it like they have changed it too now...a nice steady long run rather than a flat out sprint for a few seconds then a slow paced "stumble" till the bar comes back up enough to sprint again.
P.S. Only another 5hrs till .607 beta comes down....I canny f**kin wait!!!!! Sorry for the swear but Im gettin excited.....

Nah, it's all about the running insane distances just to surprise the enemy.
The risk of getting insta-shot if I stick my head above a wall doesn't keep my head down low in PR... What keeps me from sticking my head up is knowing that I'll either have to hang around for someone to come pick me up for twenty minutes, or just hoof the half-mile from the nearest spawn point all over again. Nothing keeps me from wanting to get killed like the prospect of trudging 800m all over again

I disagree with the new movement speeds. I have made a thread about that over here: http://realitymod.com/forum/t23176-move ... rhaul.html Unfortunately Eggman is on some kind of locking spree, simply replying to carefully thought out suggestions with a 'no' and locking the thread. So while I wait for the thread to be re-opened I am just going to post here.
VipersGhost sounds like he does not have military experience. I have some very basic experience, enough to be able to say that his main points are simply incorrect: Yes, IRL you do run and fire. In fact it is absolutely crucial to do so (read why in my thread if you have not already figured it out). I also had a brief course in urban combat. In CQB - at least when clearing bunkers and such - you do 'run' or at least move at a speed that resembles running more than the walking we have now. Speed is absolutely essential in CQB. It is very much about suprising and overwhelming the enemy. Of course, if by CQB he means engagements at up to thirty metres or so he is naturally right that combatants do not sidestep - but that does not work in the game against decent players, either, so I do not really see his point.
I still stand by everything I said in my 'Movement overhaul' thread. I just want to add that I think strafing/backwards speeds can pretty much stay how they are. It is only forward movement that needs to be faster. My suggestions for changes, therefore, are rather limited:
-Default forward movement speed becomes as fast as current run speed. Strafing and backstepping stay how they are now. I am not sure if the BF2 engine allows for different speeds in different directions. Maybe the devs can elaborate?
-Sprint becomes very fast, possibly faster than Vanilla BF2. This is realistic! When you are running for your life in the face of a T-90 you oddly enough tend to run very fast. This super-sprint depletes stamina extremely, fast, however, and stamina takes long to recover. We do not want people using the sprint to get somewhere faster like with the current system. You should pretty much be able to dash across a street and that is it. The 'standard' speed totally takes over as a means of travel. Sprint animation is changed back to Vanilla standards where weapon is lowered.

I think we should have a coup d'état and install Strategerist as El Presidente for life.
He knows more than anyone about everything so clearly he should be in charge of everything.
He is unspeakably humble and self effacing and makes everyone feel comfortable and at ease.
His Palace guard can be all the teens who want more sniper rifles.

And as the windshield melts
My tears evaporate
Leaving only charcoal to defend.
Finally I understand the feelings of the few.
