This sounds like the difference between someone from the east coast of Canada and the other english provinces. There both speaking english but I'd be hard pressed to call it the "same", I'd be hard pressed to even understand what in the hell their saying even!?

No, they're very different. I lived in Beijing for three years, and picked up quite a bit of Mandarin. I went to a hockey tournament in Hong Kong and couldn't communicate even a little bit with the people there.
And to the guy that said that Cantonese is the "new" Chinese, and that it's spoken in the more cosmopolitan cities (such as Shanghai), LMAO! Are you kidding?

Ive been to Shanghai many times,(had a school in Anhui I was scouting so every time I'd visit I'd stop in Shanghai too) and I'd be hard pressed to find ANYONE speaking Cantonese....
