As somebody who is SL a lot of the time, I say, let me keep my goddamn rifle with a decent scope. Thank you.

No but they do issue the C7 and C8.
Example the Pathfinders use the C7 Pathfinders-> Parachute Regiment->British Army
But i totally agree with what Bob is saying why downgrade weapons id much rather have a rifle with optics capable of all range engagements. It also depends on the Environment your fighting in.

Ok, lets look at what could actually be used:
US: Could have M4 instead of M16A4
UK: Has to be an L85
PLA: Has to be a QBZ-95 (QBZ-95Bs are only issued to tank crews, to my knowlege. IDK why the SF guy has it)
MEC: Could have the G3KA4 or MC51
So, we've only got one faction that in reality might issue its SLs with different weapons, the MEC it really wouldn't fit with the style of the rest of the army (powerful long range weapons, a carbine doesn't really fit even if it is 7.62x51mm) and the UK and PLA who don't issue carbines to line infantry units.
Edit: Robbo, units like Pathfinder Platoon are covered under the current "special forces" class, and you wouldn't get a squad leader from a unit like the path finders leading a squad of regular infantry.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Yeah, real smooth bub.
Anywho, this idea has been beaten to death already. Wait until the US Army comes out and see what happens.

Ex 2: In the show "Over There" the sgt uses an M4
i was wondering if this could be applied in PR by giving the US/UK squad leaders M4s, giving the chinese QBZ-97 and giving and giving the mec the old AK-74U as for the militia and insurgent teams i think their squad leader kits are fine, id also like to see what the rest of you think of this idea
So....you think this is funny,eh,Private...JOKER?!
So what is your major malfunction?!?!
Sorry, just had to seize the opportunity
I do not know how this is handled in reality, but I do not think this would improve the atmosphere and all-around impression,i mean, why give the squad leader, who is about the most important person in a squad, a weaker weapon than everybody else? That does not make sense to me yet.

you got and info on the QBZ-95 i can read, the only place ive heared of it used publicly was at the handing of of Hong Kong in 1997, and scince then its been slow to be fully intoducted because of a number of problems that plague it.

Actually, if you're talking about the relative strengths of the weapons *only* (and not the appropriateness of various weapons, calibres, optics etc etc etc), then it does make a degree of sense to outfit squad leaders with relatively weaker weapons.
It may help stop them taking point when in maneuvers with their unit and it may help stop them rushing headlong into control points, bunkers and bases! If you know your weapon has the stopping power of a legless ant, you tend to be more careful about where you go with it lol.

They are obsessed with the AKS-74U.
Thats not the point. I personally love the AKS-74U to death. Own a AK-74. Love it to death as well.
But to make a better point. Your taking that data from of all things. Movies.
In the movie's most guys carry a Desert Eagle .50. That isn't a gun alot of military and police forces carry. Low magazine, Stupid high stopping power.
Movie's aren't the best place to get reality from. I love the thought of the AKS as a new weapon for the MEC, except that it doesn't belong. If you really really like this idea I'd suggest a more suitable weapon like the HK416. Or if you prefer the newer HK417 that uses the same NATO rounds the G3 uses.
i used those as examples i thought people would notice right away, in pictures and footage of the vietnam war (kinda off for this mod but hey what can you do) the majority of what i think were officers were using the Car15. hence the fact i brought id bring this up, and i only brought up the diffrent weapons for GB,china and mec as an equivalent to the weapon.

Oh come on! What's next, take away their body armor to encourage taking cover?

Depends on the unit. The PLA troops in PR seem to represent the cream of the PLA forces (armed with the best weapons availible to the Chinese forces, Type-99, WZ-10, QBZ-95, QBU-88, etc) rather than a regular line unit. With the current weapon set up of the PLA, the QBZ-95 is the only weapon that makes sense for the SL.
The QBZ-95 is getting more widely issued, and most of the "front line" troops of the PLA have replaced their Type-81s with it (or the QBZ-03). "Elite" formations, like paratroopers, special forces and PLAM units first and foremost. As such it fits in with the "elite" equipment of the rest of the PLA faction in PR, with things like the latest and best tanks, helicopters, APCs and whatnot China has to offer.
The other options are:
Type-81 - 7.62x39mm assault rifle. Currently issued to the majority of PLA troops. Different calibre to QBZ-95 family used by the rest of the PLA forces in PR. Generally second line at the moment, would be even more so in 2010 Does not work.
QBZ-95B - Carbine variant of QBZ-95, only issued to tank crews. Does not work.
QBZ-03 - Conventional layout 5.8x42mm assault rifle. Less widely deployed than the QBZ-95 series. Largely seeing service with the PLA army regular units, which have found the change over from the Type-81 difficult, particularly the more experienced troops.Generally not issued to formations that are not issued the QBZ-95. Does not work.

The HK416 and the yet to be released HK417 (Set to come out next year.) Would be using the same ammunation and in fact interchangeable magazines with the G3 assault rifle. Now if I am correct BF2 takes place in the near future. 2010ish. I believe thats about when PR is yes?
So here is a picture of the HK416 and I'll scavenge a HK417 one later. But they are near the same from what I gather. So you've got yourself your MEC carbine right here.

If you want a Carbine for MEC then I'd say the G3KA4 would be more appropriate, just a shortened G3,no more,no less:

True but also I was going with the HK417 simply do the to overall look of the M4 and possible ease of making it. While that does look like a G3 there is no true way to show off the shortened stock, then how do you know its not just an all black G3?

Shorter barrel. But IRL, as far as I know, squad leaders use the same weapons as all the other soldiers. Why should they use another weapon?
I say we give MEC spec ops the G3KA4. Or we could keep the HK53. I like 'em both.
On another note: Give MEC Crewman the P90 PDW, please!
That is all.

Our survey says:
X
The HK416 is NOT compatible with G3 magazines. A few of the prototypes were, but then H&K decided to switch over to new polymer magazines and removed the G3 compatiblity.
Anyway, the G3KA4 has a shortened barrel (immediately obvious to the eye) as well as the slither stock. (it would just be a G3A4 if it didn't a shortened barrel).
For an MEC carbine the G3KA4 is the best choice imo.
Though the tank crewman weapon should be the
