Make it a smoke grenade maybe?
"Requesting bombardment at this location, I marked it with red smoke."

But that would not give the missile a homing signal.

LMAO
I am not referencing BHD in any particular way so don't give me that ****.
The proper way is for the seeker head to see the laser splash but the DEVs have said that doesn't work in BF so maybe a less realistic way to achieve the same effect.

What about that guy's SOFLAM laser arty? (Don't know his name)
Surely that could be a start?

POE has a deal where the Spec-ops has binocs that spot a target for arty but all i've seen it do it place the red arty marker on the map and if there is some guidance system I haven't found it.
I'd like to see JDAMs and the like in the future, with huge balancing penalties like 3 min on the runway to load it or something, but if the laser designator can be made to work somehow, combined with destructible buildings. ...... it's just begging for some carpet bombing style destruction.

Well, JDAMs are GPS/inertial navigation system guided, not laser-guided.

one major problem i see with this idea is that if the soflam spawns a heat entity would it not retain it's properties and burn the target you are designating, almost like a super long range sniper flamethrower.

Well it wouldn't be real heat, just the code written for the missile to lock on.
I actually knew that JDAMs were GPS but it didn't register at the time.
Either way...... large bombs...with limitations for balancing would be cool.
They can put the LGB head on a 1000lb bomb can't they ?

Nah, lasers are fine. IRL they don't do this, but to balance the game you should be able to see a laser beam coming from the detector so you know where someone is.

If you go behind the jets engines (tested in vBF), nothing happens. However, the missiles lock on to them. The game is not real life, it emits a "hit-box beam" like the one in the TOWs and the bomb follows that.

I'm pretty sure the missiles are locking onto the actual vehicle entity, not the engines, i doubt EA took time to do that.
however non vehicle fire entities (molotov, hotel fire, tanker truck fire, etc. will hurt you because the properties of it causes damage, however the devs might be able to split the code up or reduce the damage to 0, just a problem i could see them running into.

it makes a overhead veiw request for the arty... then when the arty fires you get to watch the shell fly over to it... kinda fun...

Tanks use a "heat source" called TTLASER or something. To be honest it isn't really useful to put a heat source on another heat source. And as far as I can tell, it isn't possible to add a new type of "heat" into the game. So I think that basically rules out laser designation, ARMs, and radar based missiles. I think that for now voip and attack markers are the best option. (Actually I think that attack markers are a little better than the laser designators that are used IRL, as you can see the direction of the target on your screen at all times, even when facing away.)

but is it possible to mix the tow controls with the bombs so it would we like a laser designator where you have to pointer the crosshairs at the target or you get a miss.

The TOW suggestion has spawned a weird idea in my head. This may make no sense and is probably completely impossible but....
Ok you have a two person aircraft. Seat one is the pilot, seat two is the bomber/recon designator person. The pilot seat is obvious, seat two works as follows: you have a pilot kit and jump into seat two, seat two is not part of the aircraft but is tied to the aircraft. Basically you jump into seat two and are booted out with a kit consisting of a m16, body armour, "laser designator" and med pack. So now that you are in seat 2 but not in the aircraft the laser designator is basically the site for a TOW missle that is attached to the plane your pilot is in. You would site the target and fire the TOW missle from the ground and guide it in like the TOW's in game or H-AT.
This isn't perfect nor do I know if you could have the seat two but not in the aircraft work. Just an out of the box idea

Bump, not sure if anyone bothered to read my idea. Curious if it sparks any thoughts from the Devs. Thoughts besides

"WTF is this guy smoking?!"

I don't know how to put smart bombs in really.
All I know is we have 2 types of iron bomb, a lock on missile system and a player guided system.
In POE2 the lock-on missiles can be used from the actual cockpit of an aircraft and they just lock onto things in front of you (like AA missiles for tanks). Why not make a new type of missile "smart bomb" which does this but has no thrust ability, so it locks onto and homes in on tanks but can only move as much as a normal iron bomb? Might be possible?
