While (as many on this forum will know) I'm not the world's biggest M16 series fan, it does have some advantages over other systems. The straight line design, direct gas system and buffers in the stock means it has lower felt recoil than other designs (such as the AR-18 gas system) meaning that it is good (control wise) for full automatic or rapid semi-automatic fire.

IMO, its an good choice for short engagements, but does have limits in the military field. However a fine law enforcement rifle (as such I cant comprehend while some LE units in the US are switching them for the HK416) where engagements are typically short and weapons can be kept surgery clean.

That rate of fire does seem rather low. 12-15 RPM is Lee-Enfield fast (for sustained fire, anyway), not something one would expect of a 5.56x45 automatic rifle.

Tbh if it's in a military handbook it's probably a rubbish guideline anyway - a soldier would be the best source on the tolerances of a weapon.

Yeah,such handbooks tend to put the values for safety guidelines a deal under the real values, but for good reasons since you can never fully compensate for the stupidity of mankind.

I think the overheat time is slightly ridiculous, that probably should be toned down.

The problem there, is that 50% of the soldiers think the M16 is a gift from God, and the other 50% think it's a gift from Satan. There's no non-biased view on it. And then there's the Army, covering up the statistics that prove them wrong....

Nope, not a whole lot

12-15 is to keep it firing for along time as in over hours. im pretty sure that if you take the rifle and shoot more then that it wont overheat. I have shot hundred of rounds over a 30 minute sitting. That was before I read the manual but I didn't experience anything horrible. Besides the rifles barrel smoking and the ***** getting hot as hell nothing really happened. Oh there was a dud but thats not the guns fault.

When your actual shooting at targets and allowing supressive weapons (like SAWs and .50 cals) do what their supose to you won't be shooting over 30 rounds in a minute. unless your in one of those "exterme urgency". Might seem alittle odd but if you look back on it the minute has already passed.

When you see those videos on LiveLeak of Soldiers shooting at builidng or holding long perids of fire, they aint letting it totaly rip with their M16s and M4s. Its mosty 50s and M249/M240.
So just next time start laying supressive fire with your rifle, go get a support weapon.

I was just waiting for the fire to get to the mag he was fumbling around with and all shit go to hell when the rounds started popping off before he put it in the gun.

Man, good war footage is hard to come by. It's rare that I don't see the same thing replaying over and over.

The steyr AUG has firing rate of 600 rpm. I reckon I managed get off 4 magazines of 30 rounds in a minute and yeah the barrel was hot but not to the point where it was dangerous.

Those AT-4s and continuous .50cal fire would be deafing which makes the video kind of funny.Esspecially the guy who yells "I can't hear" after the 2 AT-4s. Wheres our deafing gun battles?

Were you standing next to it or see it in a video? Becuase there is alot more smoke in real life then you can see in videos. just first hand experience. Either way M249s/M240s are designed for full and continuous fire. But it still happens.

In that video of the AK-47 it's clearly not the bloody metal barrel that's burst into flames, despite what the video's author says lol. It's the wood around the barrel (the seat? I dunno, not a gun-owning man) that's gone up.

What's more impressive is the idiocy of the guy waving the magazine around the flames.

The only soldiers that don't think the M16/M4 family of weapons suck *** compared to a modern day battlefield rifle, are the ones that doesn't use them in combat.

If only all the civilian AR15 worshippers would believe that.

A new M16A4 or M4A1 is fine and quite better than some worn out AK-47 you could pick up in Iraq. The problems are with the older M16A2s and M4s that have seen plenty of use and guys using carbines at ranges where they should have a rifle. It may not be reliable as the AK series or newer designs but it works if you clean it. The question now is what should replace the M16/M4?

What would you replace it with Kenwayy?

HK416, like the 80 or so purchased by an Okinawan based SF unit/battallion/<insert team size>

the .223 round also doesn't have much stopping power, and the Geneva Convention forbids the use of expanding ammo. The 6.8mm Remington(? I think it's a Remington calibre) seems to be a better compromise between a full size .30 calibre round and the varmint hunting round that is the .223. Now I'm a civilian, and I don't even own a firearm in .223, this is just what I've heard, and the experiences I've had shooting other's .223s

I've heard the 5.56x45 only has stopping power issues when fired from a short barreled weapon, such as the M4. Apparently, the 5.56 needs a certain velocity to do its thang, and a short barrel won't allow that velocity. I think the 5.56 is supposed to enter the body, then "explode" inside the poor sucker.

Well the high velocity will cause the 5.56 to tumble or in some cases fragment after hitting a person causing some very nasty damage. Yet at long ranges where the velocity drops off this does not always happen. Better 5.56x45mm ammo does exist and it could give the M16 and M4 more power at longer ranges.

The HK416 seems very reliable but so was the XM8 and that did not get past the politics involved. I just wished the HK416 looked a bit better.
