the main rifles that are used now for sniper and not DM are naturaly loud and none of them have supressors on them so making them quiet would just be taking realism out. the sound from these rifles travels miles, and since this is a realism mod they should be kept like their real counterparts.

I mean the round itself has less explosive power -- the powder is just the same.

Subsonic ammo has less of a charge behind it to prevent the bullet from going supersonic or breaking the sound barrier which would create some noise. Subsonic ammo is designed to minimize that allowing gun to sound much more like a simple misfire. There is no james bond silencer that you can't hear from 2 feet away. The gun cycling and the slide hitting along with the smaller charge going off still causes a noise. Its designed to make it harder to pinpoint then a normal gunshot.

There is the whole issue with the person you killed being reincarnated with knowledge of where he got shot from (as well as telling others)... so with that in mind I do think snipers need a little more stealth to counterbalance this UNrealism.

Ive never been killed by one sniper shot, unless it was a M95/M82 and I was standing still or the guy was CQC sniping

May I suggest more elaborate hiding places?

off the point a bit, but get rid of the directional hit indicator. when you get shot that flashy red thing tells u which direction u have been shot from. Actually is that still there or is it gone? :-(

Rifles are loud guys.... correction, Really loud. We do not need suppressors, it makes the gameplay better when you can hear where the shots are comming from. Lets face it if you need to fire off a magazine to hit your target then you deserve to be found by the enemy.

Subsonic ammunition is not very practical, it is damageing too your firearm, shitty velocities to work with and ineffective at any long range especialy for armour.
The problem with subsonic ammunition is you can get left over powder residues that can ignite afterwards all at once in your chamber and barrel and destroy or damage your rifle.
All subsonic ammunition also has to be lubricated with either solid fats like animal fat or the more convetional way of coating them in Moly.

Why anyone on a battelfield would want to risk useing underpowered, and dirty ammunition is beyond me. They can get stuck in the barrel after just getting slightly dirty.
They have such weak charges that you are not even suppose to crimp the bullets into the caseings, they should be able to move and slip around.
On top of this it is recommended that you lightly oil your barrel after every 3-4 shots too keep it slippery and relatively clean. Another hazard that comes with constantly putting lubricant in your barrel is that even with slow moving rounds you can damage or warp your barrel.

Basicaly, f**k subsonic rounds for any highpowered rifle.
Enless of course you want to go wacking targets with a Rim fire  .

Have a go at playin it now with that in mind. I played a bit after i posted and its there all right. If u get shot from the front a quater of a red circle appears up from the center of ur screen and if you get shot from the left a quater of a red circle appears to ur left so on, and so on ,Anybody else notice that.

If u survive a shot that is or a bit of splash damage.

No such thing, only big red blood circle around your screen, when you burn

But a big splat of red on your screen when shot would be nice :D

actually...no. the point of a sniper is to not be SEEN. i dont think they care much about sound considering they hav a semi-auto .50 cal sniper rifle. as you can imagine, its not that quiet. but as you said earlier, the point is "Where did that come from!" exactly. however, there are some long-range rifles that use suppresors, such as the SPR

Define " long range".

To me this ties into the reduced accuracey thread. In that everyone was debating what to do about the accuracey and how to affect it with stance and stamina. Eggman posted a reply, part of which said that they are trying to deal with all the issues surrounding the lack of effective camouflage in BF2. An example being that the grass doesn't draw at distance so you are not actually hidden. He also commented on the lighting and character models reflecting to much light.

If some of the issues that make it easy to spot someon are addressed then snipers should be much harder to find.

IMO part of the problem is snipers picking a good spot and firing off several rounds at multiple targets. People will quickly figure out where you are by doing this. Sometimes the best shot for a sniper is no shot at all.
