is a small figure of a man, and indications where you'd been wounded
Apart from surely being hardcoded, what would be the point in this?

I figured it might be hard coded

but it would be really cool,
'oh shit Ive got a bullet in my crotch'
haha

I don't see the point in having a health bar. In PR, you're not supposed to catch ANY bullets, so if you're at 60% health, and you catch 2 rounds instead of 3, you still messed up tactically. It's not like hitting the ground too hard or brushing against razor wire is going to be consistently crucial in getting you killed, it's going to be those 7.62 rounds and your dumb self running into the open.

That brings me on to my next point. Knowing how much life you have left isn't that good. Why not take a look at the mother of all games? Mario Bros, they didnt have a health bar! Did they?

The point is that in PR i have no idea if i've lost 20 or 45% HP. And it's really not cool when you slide down a mountain or fall down from a building and dont know how much damage you took. Like i said, IRL you sould be able to feel the difference between hurting your knee and breaking your foot.

Well, people shout " OMG OMG I THINK I'VE BROKEN MY LEG OMG OMG" after having a skateboard fall (thx collegehumour

), that clearly means that they don't know.

The difference here is that if you break your foot, you're at 0% health. You're unable to fight, but not dead. Unless you're in a fierce knife fight or being run down by an A-10 North by Northwest style, i doubt you'll have the adrenaline to overcome a very unheroicly broken bone. But "dying" in PR isn't necessarily the same thing as a letter home and a funeral, it's just that you aren't capable of fighting any more in that battle.
What i'm saying is that if you're at 50% health, you will be fighting essentially as effectively as if you were at 100% health, because it only takes a split second and two or three shots to the chest to put you out of the game (which is not nearly the same thing as being outright killed!).

Sorry, I'm not seeing your point. Are you saying that it doesn't matter if you know how injured you are because the penalty for death isn't as bad as in real life?

You also died in one hit.

well, the worst that will happen is you will be staring at your screen count down from 30 seconds (or 15 or whatever the server is set at) untill you can fight again.

I think the critically wounded countdown should be added to by your screen getting progressively darker, maybe even taking out the 30 second counter alltogether. Then once you get past that 30 seconds, the normal kill screen.
Also maybe remove all HUD elements including your minimap GPS with the medic indicators.

You could phrase it like that. The penalty for "death" in PR is that you can't fight any more, not that your soldier is no longer alive. Getting to the "can't fight" stage only takes 2 or 3 bullets, even if you get shot in the feet, so if you're at 50% health, your tactics shouldn't be any different than if you were at 100% health.

Hmm, aren't these the same thing for a game? Plus your soldier definitely does die... you respawn as a new soldier.

I beg to differ. If I'm just over 50% I can use a dressing so that the next hit I take doesn't take me into the state just before falling unconscious where you can't see anything or run. If I didn't then the next hit would make me unable to run or return fire. This is a big difference at longer ranges where in the time between your enemies' shots you could get into cover or get in a headshot.

The main problem with coughing that I have is that it's not too precise. Imagine a situation where I get shot. It usually goes like this: I get shot, use a field dressing, wait five seconds, hear another cough, use another field dressing. Now, I actually have to sit there and wait for a couple of seconds to determine if the bleeding is stopped or not. Worst part is, those 5 seconds that I wait actually contribute to more health loss.

Not to thread hijack, but after reading this it gave me a small idea. I agree with daranz; the current cough-means-your-dying system is not precise. It's quite annoying to not know that your slightly injured, you step on a thorn and bleed to death in the middle of Ghost Train-esk forests.
Anyway- my suggest is that when your character has any damage on them (≥90/100 hp) then just the small medic plus from the health bar shows up. (Not the whole bar, mind you, but just the plus, indicating injury)
UPDATE: also, maybe you could add a very slight pulse noise, that'd make sense too.
