So if they were firing smoke in the 60s then certainly they should still have such rounds, however, laser designators are obviously the preferred choice but smoke rounds can be used for screening as well.

back on topic, CS Gas artillery shells!!! OH! and my favorite...VARIABLE TIME ROUNDS!

I think the "smoke rounds" you are referring to are WP rounds. WP stands for White Phosphorus. Its nickname is Willie Pete. It is a powder that is activated my moisture and will burn right thru a human being. The only way to stop it is to stop cut off its air supply. It was and still is used for marking targets, but certainly not for masking troop movements. I’m still not certain that it’s currently fired from tanks. Why would today’s tanks need to mark a target when it can kill most anything in one or two rounds? Run thru a cloud of it if you want to, you will come out on the other side without skin :)

Commanders Arty would be a much better and realistic choice for deploying smoke on a large scale in game.

I can't look at youtube vids at work. I'll have to check it out when I get home this evening. What's the vid about mortars in PR? I know all about mortars in RL, (I was in a mortar platoon as well) but I wasn't aware that they were considering mortars in PR.

It was brought up in the past quite a bit. Not exactly sure if the devs ever considered it or not, but I defiantly do believe that some form of smoke artillery would be a welcome edition.

Point of Existence 2 features smoke ammunition on mortars and I believe self-propelled howitzers as well. Though the CO's smoke barrage asset is what I would like to see emulated in PR. In PoE2, the VBF2 artillery has been replaced by "smoke artillery", which is best described by the screenshots below.

If you ask me though, PoE2 is a little too fast paced for the smoke barrage to be used effectively. For PR however, something similar could be used to great effect.

On another note, this is somewhat off-topic as it doesn't concern "smoke" artillery specifically, but I still think this thread; which was posted by Guerra norte several months ago, is a brilliant idea on how artillery could be implemented.

It would take me all day to find the exact passage in the book that refers to the smoke rounds but I found a vehicle reference page for the M48 that was described as having been the tank that fired the smoke rounds and under the Typical Ammo Load field it says "64 anti-personnel, armor-piercing, high-explosive, anti-tank, smoke" so I dunno. It could be referring to WP but that's all it says is smoke.

Mortars in POE2. Vid is a tutorial, but it demonstrates the use of smoke rounds too.

Good find. I just checked it out. It is referring to WP rounds. They can be fired into small areas, bunkers and tunnel systems to make them un-inhabitable for some time. Also very effective on lightly armored vehicles and trucks.

POE2 was a bit fast paced for me too, but that was over a year ago or more. Good find as well. I just went back and read it. It's a bit more complicated than I was suggesting, but I like it. Flares would be good on Bi-Ming of course.

PoE2 has a lot of interesting ideas that I like, but it's more vBf2 than PR in terms of gameplay, which is lame. However, I think many of those ideas, such as the smoke artillery asset and possibly the mobile artillery batteries (here's hoping for M270 MLRS systems!), would make great additions to PR.

I suggested this a long while back but I don't think I got many replies.

As for tank's shooting smoke, didn't they have a smoke shell as a weapon in .302, or was that just a weapon that shot smoke like it does now, all around the tank?

I think this has been brought up and discussed a bunch of times, but i can't remember why, but there was a reason to not go with it, or we weren't able to do it for some reason. because i too wanted/suggested this awhile ago.

Well then your in for a treat. The Devs have said that mortars are in the works. During the first 0.6 beta release the kit request screen listed a mortar. There was no mortar kit to be had though (it was the first kit I tried to select before the mandatory sniper->marksman->H-AT->support request hiearchy ;-) )

If they do bring in the portable mortars it would be nice to have standard mortar rounds (?) and smoke rounds that would produce more smoke then a nade (assuming this fits with reality, not sure what size mortars are in the works?)

lag every one used to yell if you asked for more smoke or improved dust effects

vanilla artillery times CANNOT be adjusted. thats the main reason no maps are using artillery in v0.6.

I think certain maps could benefit well from a smoke only artillery, but if there is no way to adjust the timing, only a couple maps would be good for it, as it would get spammed to all hell.

Does anyone know how long the POE2 smoke lasts on the ground?

It would be ultra lame to lay a giant smoke wall, and then 15 seconds later it ALL disappears..

POE smoke does not last that long, not as long as smoke grenades in PR.
The Smoke Arty is not that useful for this reason.

Yeah, the smoke arty in POE2 only last a few seconds after they all hit, from what I remember :-\
