The reason the ACU turns "darker" and more woodland-ish over time in the woods is the same reason any clothing does in the woods. It gets dirty and isn't cleaned very often. In the desert it gets lighter not because of some voodoo magic to make it blend into the sand, but because the constant exposure to the sun/dust that you can't clean out., just like any other set of clothing.
