C4 simply detonating next to it won't kill it, though if you really want to you can stack several kg of it and the blast force will push the tank a good distance away.
most MBTs nowadays can survive a nuclear blast so long as they r not in ground zero, an explosive detonating next to them isn't much of a comparison. But a C4 sitting right on top of an MBT top armour or engine compartment is a wee bit different story. Explosive power by itself means little to a tank, a tank can receive explosive blast that would collapse a small building and still be perfectly fine, but when you concentrate the blast to a small part of the tank, then the tankers really have something to worry about now.
anyway, in the game itself, as far as i can observe, SABOT rounds are most effective against the heavy armoured vehicles, tanks especially.
a single SABOT to the rear of a tank would kill it instantly. On the other hand, multiple HEAT on the tanks won't kill it (eventually it will after 3 or 4 but if he returns fire with SABOT then ur toast). On the light vehicles however it works the other way around, a SABOT on the MEC van will bring it to near death, but not destroy it instantly (which means the driver can jump out), but a single HEAT on it would instantly destroy it giving no chance whatsoever for the occupant to bail out.
APCs are something i am not yet certain, i haven't tested which round is more effective in bringing them down.
theoretically, since APCs in BF2 doesn't seems to come with ERA panels, nor do they have chobham type armour, they should go down with HEAT just as fast as they do with SABOT.
