On Basrah you can drive over a grappling hook with a vehicle (especially useful at the VCP) to make it disappear.

This i think sounds like a very good idea! Versatile and simple.

Except that then a lot of people would be running around with grappling hooks who weren't supposed to.

Nah, i dont see that as a problem at all. Do you, Wasteland, or was this mere argument for arguments sake?
Sure some lucky guy here and there will pick up a grapple others left behind, but i hardly doubt that will flood the maps with dangling ropes.
Same to me if the engy himself picks it up or the guy behind, they both'll die soon anyway. :)
Its only realistic, without compromizing gameplay in a negative way.
The gain weighs much heavier than the cost, no?
And hopefully it will add to people not leaving eg. the River Fort fully accessible with ropes hanging plentyful off every single wall.

Will players be able to pick up the hook even when they have one already?

Meh, when I am defending on a map that has grappling hooks, I always play as Engineer so that I can quickly toss my hook down in a useless place and grab hooks thrown by enemies as soon as they toss them. It works well because they are not expecting their hook to disappear right away. I agree its frustrating when you can't dismantle a hook if there are no engineers nearby, but I just position a squad member to watch the top of it and get free kills until someone respawns as engie to remove it. Not really too big of a deal, but it will be cool if there is some simple solution to promote destroying them.

If you don't look after you equipment it's you own fault. It's not a great deal of people have grappling hooks in the first place to be stolen.

In regard of the Re: New Spec-Ops Kit-thread, db gave me incentive to bump this old thread.

Would be good to make the ropes disappear by knifing it or something like that, but somebody needs to look into that to check if it's possible.
Still an issue. Any chance someone can look into it? This thread has a few ideas.

Can we not just have it so every kit has the grappling hook 'ability' and has no ammo for it?
when we are this far, cant we just have it deplete instantly for the non supposed classes?

so he picks it up and it's gone

I believe the issue is that without a grappling hook spot, it won't let you pick it up. And several of the classes have full loadouts, meaning that there's no space for an empty grappling spot.

I think trying to make it knifeable is a good idea, but I don't really have the time to check it out. As far as I know, it just needs a material change to one that will take damage from the knife, and probably needs to be given hitpoints, although it might already have some. I'll put it on my to do list, but no promises.

It can be done in a sense....but only if you are the one who laid the grappling hook.
If someone is on the line and you pick it up, it disappears and they fall to the ground!
But I agree....to be able to simulate sawing off a rope that an enemy was climbing would be usefull!
