Besides, even if you don't shoot them down, you at least sweep out the infantry inside, especially from the Blackhawks

One story i have about things being unrealistic agains choppers is HAT,you all know what it is and it feared by most people. This is the scenario: My gunner and I were hovering at 500 altitude(idk how high that really is) we are over the north and south bunkers and he is using his gun to spot targets so we can shoot and run, we are looking around. He thougt he saw some movement in one of the bunkers and right as he says this i hear no sound but all i see is the kill cam of our burning chopper. Some guy on MEC had magically spotted us and happened to have the HAT kit. he shot and got very lucky. He said the HAT has a range of 600m but im pretty sure our altitude wouldnt allow a rocket of that sort to hit us.

I just had another look as Kashan to check but I guess 500 alt still being vunerable is believeable on that map just because of the view distance.
You can see why people who go out and fly around at below 200 are dying in 5 mins or less. Mobility helps but you need a combo of the two to stop them getting you.
On the map al kufrah oilfield you would have been ok for sure because the view distance is high (as a 0.6 new map) but nothing is as extreme as kashan.
On a normal map (with the normal level of mist) I find 200 is ok
I thought all maps would be like kashan with extended viewdistance but even if it was possible I can see why it was not done
Maybe the real issue is that you should have got a lock on noise before being hit. Along with silent 50 cal bullets, fire detection sucks in helis
The range of the javalin for example is: Range: <75 to >2500 m
The cloud cover on kashan is 800alt. Not sure if we can extrapolate a rough scale between kashan alt and real life metres

ERYX is a short-range man-portable SACLOS-based wire-guided anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) produced by European company MBDA. It is used by several countries, including the Canadian, French, and Norwegian armies. The weapon can also be used against bunkers and pillboxes. It also has some capability in the anti aircraft role to bring down low flying helicopters, due to its wire guided system.Ryan3215 wrote:He said the HAT has a range of 600m but im pretty sure our altitude wouldnt allow a rocket of that sort to hit us.
Taken from wikipedia
And yes, the ERYX only has a range of 600m so it might be unrealistic (depending on your altitude)

You have to ask yourself, is this realistic? There is no lock-on tone IRL except for laser and radar guided weapons. If an enemy got behind you with an SA-7 he could lock onto you and hold it forever you'd never know until after the launch.Sabre_tooth_tigger wrote:Maybe the real issue is that you should have got a lock on noise before being hit. So there you are, hovering in a real Apache, "whump whump whump" of the rotor, "ratatatatata" of the chain gun, "whooosh" of a hellfire, "Kilo 69, I have a target for you in grid 342 dash 8," coming through the radio...do you think you would know you were being hit by any type of small arms? Unless you were within tracer burn out range not likely until something solid got hit, and by then the damage is being done.

This problem could be solved by if the TV-missile screen displays an indicator for distant vehicles and armor, much like it is in bombing mode in an A-10 (those little green squares). This indication would be very effective and allows the helos to engage enemy targets at beyond visual range, which is how it is in real life. I mean, most of the time, a co-pilot would fire looky-looky shots using the TV missile before actually acquiring the exact locations of a target. So adding this feature would greatly improve the survivial rate. Or alternatively, shortening the respawn time for helos might work as well.
My 2 cents.

My point is with the 50 cal you never hear the bullet hitting, it can tear you to bits in seconds but every bullet is silent upon impact.Liquid_Cow wrote:not likely until something solid got hit, and by then the damage is being done.
The apache has armour plating, if a 50 cal passes through, it'd make a ding noise at least I think.
I think its a known bug anyway, happens in bf2 too
