What happens is Windows utilises the majority of the RAM for the OS, and retains some for the VGA and other hardware systems (mostly VGA).
To what extent the system will pilfer the memory depends on:
1) Your chipset
2) Your motherboard
I run 4 Gigs of RAM because I occasionally do 3D rendering and video editing/re/-encoding. On my last rig (Pentium 4 3.7Ghz EE, on a 925XE chipset - Intel D925XECV2 mobo) 32bit XP recognised 2.7Gb of RAM. On my current ring (Core2 Duo E6750 on a P35 chipset, Gigabyte P35C-DS3R mobo) XP32 recognises between 3.2Gb and 3.7Gb depending on BIOS settings.
For general gaming, 2Gb will serve you well enough, although because I'm obsessive and because RAM is cheap, I'd opt for 3 when building a new rig just to future-proof your machine that little bit extra.
Personally I think it's criminal that you can still buy a brand new laptop and even some desktops packaged with 1Gb or even 512Mb of RAM. It just isn't enough for smooth operation, IMHO.

CPU: AMD 64 Dual Core
RAM: 3GB
GPU: X1600 512MB
OS: Windows Vista Ultimate 64
Not that great of a system for today’s standards, but I can sure as hell play PR on all high with AA on x6 at 1280x800 Widescreen resolution with an average of 40-60FPS. Of course I'll be getting a new system when the Geforce 9 series come out, but other than that I'm fine with what I got right now. And for those of you running on Vista, I advise you to change your theme to Windows Classic, and exiting Sidebar while running games. Also make sure to right click on the PR/BF2 icon/properties/compatibility and run as the administrator.

What do you mean, lokks like ****? And which settings are we talking about, mate? This tread was about RAM, so I don't get the connection.'USMC[KILLER wrote:;493897']what settings would be good for my 8800gts 640mb? atm my gfx look like ****.
I have the same card, and I would not say it looks like ****
Maybe you should open up a new thread in the help section and specify your problem, then maybe someone can help you.
Cheers!

CPU: AMD 64 X2 Dual Core 5000+ 2.6 ghz
RAM:2G
GPU:GeForce 6150SE
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium-32 bit, go figure.
My dad bought a new home computer with a great setup except for the video card, expressly to keep me from playing too many video games. So far it's worked out I guess, I'm running PR on everything low/off, view distance 100%.
Vista definitely is a RAM hog, but thats life. I'm not a big fan, especially of all the new security BS which just gets in the way until you turn it off, but its what came on the machine.

When I installed Windows Vista around 9 months ago my performance plunged down and I could run PR on all high, AA x4, at 1280x800, but I could only have textures set to medium or I would experience unplayable frame rates. Under XP Pro everything ran fine on all high with 60+FPS with 2GB or system memory, but after Vista things changed. Recently I upgraded to 3GB of RAM and I can play maxed out again with 35+FPS. Couldn't be happier.

What the hell is this? Wheres that comment about the E-penis measurement being held "not here" when you need it...
Not to mention, this is an old thread that someone restarted to ask about .7's requirements.
So in answer, Id say possibly slightly higher(maybe?) than .6 or right where they are for .6. When fastroping, you'll notice a bit more drop in frame rate as bf2 still cant believe what its doing, but aside from that, Id say .7 will be close enough to .6.
And as for the person who restarted the thread and listed specs asking if they could play .7 on full high... check .6, hows it work? All high at like 100 fps? Then id say you'e ok. All medium and low at 10 fps, dont think .7 is gonna help you. .6 is out everyone, so play it and see what works for you, and .7 will be dang near the same thing, maybe a bit more demanding, but just a bit.
idk... we wont know til .7 is out, so we really cant answer... the testing doesnt even have everything itll have so theres no way to tell there either...
so please please please stop posting how you run it all on full on your 64' plasma HD blu ray ps3 dual core monitor with anti aliasing and AF set to 1000X
That is all.

You should note that since a lot of people are migrating towards Windows Vista that they might experience a great amount of performance drop like I did, so when a lot of you suggest 2GB of RAM being enough to run all high at decent FPS, it might not be the same under Vista. A lot of people have been posting having issues with PR under Vista so I think it’s worth mentioning the cons and how to improve on them.'[R-CON wrote:OkitaMakoto;544463']What the hell is this? I understand, but some of these posts have nothing but specs w/out their operating system. i know Vista sucks up RAM, a friend bought a pc and we saw that first hand.
And yes, that should be discussed, but if youre going to posts specs, at least say your operating system, why this is different from someone else who posted... dont just say

Theres a difference between trying to help and just showing off your specs...SLI'd 9999gtx 2 Gig RAM cards
30 inch monitor
Double full settings with 1,000 fps, (I'd like more though, too much lag)

So this thread has absolutely no value at all for someone who thinks about dl'ing PR but wonder if their computer meet the standards? Yeah sure it is a bit of show-boating but reading these specs and how PR run on it is kind of good info.

Look, all I'm asking is that you either be more descriptive (cheesemans talk of Vista is a superb example of why) and provide more detail as to what seems to be changing from vBF2 to PR spec-wise, or just dont say anything.
Its not a big deal, honestly. Just make sure you lend a bit more info than saying "My SLI'd/crossfired cards and my super fast computer runs it at 100fps" (ie stating the obvious with no other reason than showboating)
You guys are making this more than I intended, ha just please, if youre gonna showboat, try to go the extra 50 characters in your post and say something that a. might not have been said b. where your pc is lacking c. perhaps what youve heard from others and how their systems hold up?

If showboating is really what you want to do, make a showboating thread in the OT part of the forums. here isnt the place, here is where you ask for system requirements as in the OP.

Well the computer Ive been using for the past 3 releases just isnt enough anymore and I got a new one for Christmas. I cant use it to compare with my current one until the new year. I was hoping that people could help by posting similar systems and their experiences instead of blatently good computers and condescending remarks.
I mentioned .7 because Ill be spending more time on that and higher releases than .6 which is coming to a close.
