You cannot bring privately owned weapons on a deployment. Generally, the only troops issued sidearms are:
-Military police; including Criminal Investigations Division agents
-Other security forces; for example: Marine Security Guard Detachments at embassies, Marine Corps Security Force companies (including FAST Companies), Navy Mobile Security Squadrons / VBSS Teams and Ship's Reaction Forces.
-Crew-served weapon gunners; medium machineguns, mortars and man-portable rocket launchers/recoilless rifles.
-Tank crewmen; though carbines are becoming the norm.
-Aviators and aircrew; for helicopter crews, though, more carbines are appearing.
-Sniper team members
-Special operations forces
-Certain officers and NCOs in front-line units; platoon leaders/commanders, platoon sergeants and sometimes squad leaders.
Most other grunts will never even get a chance to qualify with the service pistol, just go through a familiarization session.
