sounds good baba, but this pulls more people of the front line(32 players a side aint enough :) )and are you willing to code, animate, model and skin all this?

if the Arty isn't as hardcoded as everyone implies, maybe a smoke barrage for cover?

Actually never seen a team organized enough to make a smoke barage with the LAV/BTR to cover infantry movement. But then, arti would motivate its use somehow.
Maybe not vehicles, but placeable artilery assets by CO that can be manned?

I'm not for the player controlled artillery. Reason being is that with a limit of 32 players per team, and maps becoming ever larger, games are spread too thin to have any more players in a support role.

I'd love to see some form of Commander controlled artillery. Some sort of light barrage that could be used every 20 to 30 minutes. Even better might be to have a variety of rounds available, such as HE (High Explosive), White Phosphorus, Smoke.

I wouldn't mind seeing some squad leader controlled light artillery, just a small mortar barrage, maybe have a heavy artillery barrage controlled by the commander.

mortars would be the cats meow.

The mortar suggestion has been around for aaaaages. It would just be plain confusing for it to not be put in with so much demand.

We need mortars but, not player controlled, they just take people off the front line. I think some sort of system where the squad leader can call for a mortar barrage would be quite cool. Obviously it would need to be quite limited in the amount of times it can be called per battle and require some element of skill to use, maybe have a system like in Vietcong where you had a map of your area and you clicked where the barrage would go. The skill element was in reading the map correctly or you might drop the arty on yourself.

Don't get me wrong player controlled arty would be cool, i just think that the infantry is already spread thinly enough and trying to coordinate with an artillery player in another squad where you want him to shoot seems too cumbersome. You'd have to go through the commander, and he's already got enough to deal with, organising the other squads getting air strikes for them and organising airlifts.

Though it might be a good idea to have the commander approve the mortar barrage before it goes in. I would imagine it then to be like the vanilla arty but more spread out and smaller explosions. Wont do much damage to armoured vehicles but light vehicles and infantry should try to clear the area.

I think what i've just said is actually a good idea and hope a dev sees it.

The thing about modern artillery is that it's fairly accurate (you get GPS for determining your position, GPS for determining target's position, and a computer to calculate the trajectory for you), so a BF42-like system might not be the most realistic ever. A FH 2-like system might be more realistic, as long as you don't get the overhead view.

Another major thing about modern artillery is radar. There are radars capable of detecting and incoming artillery shell, and calculating the point of origin. So, if an artillery piece sits around for too long, the enemy is bound to get a fix on them and shoot back. This is why insurgents in Iraq shoot their mortars a couple of times, jump on the back of a Hilux and floor it before the coalition can dispatch an artillery strike of their own (not really desirable if they were firing from an urban area), or redirect some other sorts of forces into the launch location. Unless the hypothetical implementation of artillery in PR had a similar feature, a player could find himself an out of the way spot, and rape everything on the map to his heart's content.

Pretty much exactly what I said. Player controlled artillery would mean in addition to your dedicated Pilot, Armor and transport squads you'll need a dedicated artillery squad. Having off-map, commander approved artillery assets is the best choice IMO. You not only keep the amount of necessary support roles to a minimum, but you also stress the importance of a good commander, and the devs save up on a lot of work in terms of modeling, coding etc.

Hope a dev takes a look at this thread then, I really like the idea I posted above Similar to Kilroys idea, but my method would be simpler to add since its jsut he vannilla arty with changed stats.
