What is your opinion on the BF2 engine?

I just remembered one thing I hate so utterly much about BF2 engine:

What kind of idiot figured out that the best way to change graphic settings is to:
a) disconnect from a server
b) change setttings
c) shut down the game
d) start the game
e) log-in
f) join (create local) server
g) wait 10 minutes for goddamn shaders to optimize.
h) find out that you're not satisfied with the current settings
i) repeat...

This is just ridiculous.
I know you don't change the settings that often, but I just got myself a new graphic card so I had to run through all of these steps. I think I lost at least 2 years of my life right there


Ah and one more point - partly 'hardcoded' control settings.
Want to use shift for something else than sprint ?
Too bad unless you wanna fiddle 'round with a config.

Bf2 Engine is somewhere good ! if u look at plain bf2 (vanila) well that first look right there sucks ! but when u look at the bf2 transformation to Project Reality the bf2 engine is actuely awesome for being able to make those changes happen

That probably had something to do with using too many resources at once or probably crashing your system, especially since BF2 took a lot of resources back in its day.

Source is just about the easiest thing out there to mod and it hasn't come anywhere close to BF2/PR.

Speaking from a person who knows nuttin about coding ect. ect. ect. I have tried all the other fps war games and I mean all of em I have a shelf of war games all the ones that were supposed to be the good from all the reviews on forums and I have to say they all suc donkey *** including cod 4 blah blah. Not much out there for game realiastic point and the game play I have to say for all the flaws it has my vote as being one of the best. What do I know Im just a flatland hillbilly. ??: ??:

I dislike the engine, but you gotta give MOD teams credit for what they can get out of it. its not a bad idea for an engine, just a p*ss poor job of implementing it And too much hardcoding/making things need to be done round "aboutedly"

I dislike it. The only reason why the bf2 engine is "good" is because it supports 64 players, large scale maps and squads and not to forget tanks and aircraft.

Thanks! I find it nice that my first thread wasn't locked. On account of the BF2 engine it seems to offer nice team play and cooperation. However, by the look of things it isn't exactly a coder's "paradise". You can't really complain (That Much), though. The BF2 engine was designed exclusively for vanilla BF2, so that's what you get. Unlike multi-game engines like Source, there is little need to be flexible. Mod support is just a small "Bonus" on the side most likely included so that EA could role out expansion packs. Like I said: its an engine for a single game, and that's what you get.

P.S. BF2142 Doesn't count as a second game.

To be honest, this is a great engine. This game was released in like 2005-2006 or so? 64 players with huge maps, great graphics, and some room to expand. It did great what it was made to do, and I respect that. It is just annoying for modders to have such a good engine limit them because it was made to do one thing, with little to expand upon.

Hence why it isn't better. Source lacks a lot of things BF2 has such as squads, commanders, vehicles, airplanes and helicopters, move points and a minimap that can be interacted with, less pixalated water,and vast desert and jungle/woodland maps. Big deal, Source has the ability to lean around corners, but that isn't even really that necessary and still does not put Source above BF2. I would go as far as to say that the stock BF2 Engine is way above a heavily modified Source Engine.

Source is not better, for the simple fact that since its soo easy to mod, it way easy to create custom cheats that the cheat detection wont "see".
Furthermore, it does not support squad based tactics, nor does it support strategical battles or combined arms.

Its not built for large scale, multiple object interaction enviroments.

Exactly so. Source is supposed to be a flavourful liquid or relish accompanying food.



The engine itself doesn't suck, as the core features of it are very good as others have pointed out - 64 players online, large maps, a squad system. What's awful about it is how much of the core stuff is completely uneditable. So it's got good points and bad points - a state of existence usually ignored by Internet Discussion.

I love BF2 because it's the only game that doesn't make me want to hurl all over my keyboard. I've tried numerous other games and BF2 is the only one doesn't give me motion sickness.

I tried PR tonight for the first time and I had a ball! Love it.

If anyone else suffers from this, or you know someone who does, please pass this on: I recently watched an episode of MythBusters where they were seeking a remedy for motion sickness that doesn't have any side-effects (dramamine, for instance, just makes me sleepy). They discovered that the centuries old use of ginger is the best thing going. They gave Adam a ginger pill and it worked. Normally Adam would get really sick after being in the puke chair for 3 minutes. After taking a ginger pill, he was able to be in it for a half hour and still no sickness and the best part was no side effects!

Someone once recommended it to me, but I thought it was just some "herbal" thing that probably wouldn't really work, but after seeing Mythbusters, I'll be heading to the health food section and getting a big fat jar of ginger pills...and then load up all those games that made me sick in the past. BOOYAH! Look out boys, granny will be on a rampage now!
