All assualt rifles issued to soldiers in the united sates military are "automatic weaponary", not just special forces.
Special forces teams in all branches of the armed forces use belt fed lmg, weather it be a m249, a m60e4, or another lmg that is indigenous to the region i.e. the rpk, rpd, pkm, etc....
A wide spray pattern is ideal when suppressing the enemy. Obviously the saw or a lmg will have better luck doing this task....but you dont always have a saw or lmg with you. The m4 especially can complete this task. The army has had the same outlook since WW2 when it comes to one man to suppress the enemy and 3 others to take the oppurtunity, this is common knowledge. Every one and thier mother knows some one who has served or is serving.... But that does not make them correct...nor does it make them experts on modern military tactics, fighting scenarios, or weapons effectiveness especially when your source is one of the lowest ranking persons on the battlefield. I am glad to hear that you have shot some full auto guns, but I own full auto guns. I work with full auto guns. I shoot them 4 to five times a week. I have recieved training from former special forces members, and I have read several books on this subject, seeing as it is one of passions. Sorry to hear about your grandfather, my Granfather is a WWII vet too,2nd ranger Btl. company F.
