I got back from my trip and had a day off work today so Ive just spent the last 13 HOURS setting up all the hardware and software on my spare computer. After an hour of trying Ive got the editor to work.
Im thinking that maybe this mapping business is going to be a pain in the arse! Anyway Im off tomorrow ( today
) as well so hopefully more "fun" then. All the software loading time has given me a good chance to read up on alot of tuts though. My "map idea" has totally changed now, so it will be inland and based around a large missile site. My terraced city will have to wait, till another time!

yeah an assault craft would be cool, even if it couldnt take vehicles - anything is better than a rubber dinghy! I wont be making a boat for the map Ive started as its inland. I only started it today but it already looks nice. I spent most of the day playing with terrain software, but its been worth it. Im waiting for the colourmap to render right nowJantje|NL^ wrote:+1

Cross roads and fords/bridges are good places.
Place the rivers first, where they WOULD actually flow, dont avoid any lakes. After that start with the man made things like roads, but dont place them for the hell of it, Roads are used to get somewhere.
Hope that helps a little.
Oh, and DONT place just one square field on its own. That does not happen IRL. Behind my house there is a HUGE field, probably over 1km square, place at least 4 static fields together.
Its a 4km map and its quite mountainous and rocky. Ive used the hills to cut down on placing objects to save file size and time. I totally agree with you about the scale of things. Half my map ( 8 sq km ) is going to be a missile testing complex.
