I think a 7 minute decay timer really punishes people for leaving vehicles in the middle of nowhere. Can you imagine if you came back to your CO and said "Yeah uh... we lost the M1 somewhere, can we have another one?"
At the same time, it acknowledges that it's a game and people will do stuff like that (intentionally or just inadvertantly). And those few people shouldn't completely ruin it for others.
Also .. these are just mapping guidelines and I hope that they communicate the intent of making level design a more "realistic" experience for the player, but leave mappers the freedom to achieve this objective in their own way.
I'd actualy like to retrofit our guidelines to the Vanilla BF2 maps, I think they would improve significantly with some changes along the lines we're discussing here.
