How would you know? EA/DICE article somewhere? The only sure thing I know is that the BF2 engine was written in C++. I read this part in a interview where someone was critizicing their decision to use this language. The one to critizice this choice was a noob imo..markonymous wrote:the bf2 engine is based upon the 1942 engine[...]
This was before BF2 was released, so you can imagine how old that interview must be right now..
Frostbite is the name of the physics engine. The "whole" engine is composed of smaller independent modules. Frostbite is one of them.markonymous wrote: BF3 is going to be the frostbite engine as far as i know so thats not gonna be a problem.
You got this right. That would be like Microsoft making Windows an open source project and releasing the code for free...but then again, away would go their cash cow..markonymous wrote: i still don't think they're gonna release the source code though.

Did DICE disown Battlefield Vietnam? It seems like whenever they talk about battlefields, its just "1942, then BF2, then..." wait, what? what about BFV??? Did it just not get enough awards or recognision?

Anyways, BF3 hasn't been confirmed, but there is an official picture out there, I had a copy of it until my computer broke(AGAIN!) and I needed a new harddrive so everything was gone. There is also evidence that BF3 is in the works, such as EA/DICEs "no comment" to the questions of Battlefield 3, and the fact they own the website/domain name "Battlefield 3".

Re: PR: Bf2 vs BF3
Has anyone seen the gameplay videos of BF:BC?
Though the visuals and destruction are outstanding, I find the game play to be excessively rambo/superman-like and distasteful.
Hope OFP2 will have the same amount of visual/destruction but this better gameplay or BF2 get's it source code released.

noooo, its not... If the BF2 engine is based on the 1942 engine then Crysis was based on the BF2142 engine..markonymous wrote:no... since the bf2 engine is based upon the 1942 engine so giving the source code to that would be like giving us the bf2 engine.BF3 is going to be the frostbite engine as far as i know so thats not gonna be a problem.
i still don't think they're gonna release the source code though.
the 1942 and BF2 engine are very different... BFV used a modified version of the BF1942 engine. BF2142 used a modified version of the BF2 engine. BFH from the looks of things is using a modified BF2142 engine. The BF2 and BF1942 engines are VERY diffrent.

Re: PR: Bf2 vs BF3
surely everything was loosely based on the Doom engine in that case?? lol jokes(dont kill me please)
but i think, graphics dont bother me that much. its part of the reason why i dont have crysis, yes i can play it pretty much all on high, but to be honest, if the gameplay is shite, like crysis, ill pass. So i would say, if they do do the same for BF3 like let modders play around with the modding tools, then let the devs take it from there even if we got the source code!

Got to agree there, loved 1942, god I bought a new PC just for it back then, enjoyed BFV how could you not if you loved flying in choppers with Music playing.AirCasper wrote:The battlefield series seems to hit and miss every other release, so I have good hopes for BF3
BF 1942: Hit
BFV: Miss
BF2: Hit
BF 2142: Miss
get my drift.
Enjoyed BF2 although I would say it took PR to have the Multiplayer experience fun I’d say I had had in 1942
BF2142 I have never played it or even tried it. I don’t know if it was a case when it came out I thought my PC would not handle it or just thought it would not be as fun as BF2 was and too tech driven. I must emit that UAV that gives sniper position away and artillery killed Vanilla 1942 for me.
Then I found PR!
First impression laughable – What’s going on I keep getting killed!
Second impression – Aaaaaaa right Bullets are dangerous in this!
After a few weeks – Total immersion in PR and team play.

Battlefield Bad Company will be nice to play, but i'm sure EA will build up a new Battlefield based on Frostbite Engine and modern era vehicule, you know why i'm sure ? cause we talk about E.A.Cash... they know they will made money whit BF3...

Re: PR: Bf2 vs BF3
btw, the question is even how much of the bf2 engine they own their self, since there is no further information about the origin, while bf42 is using a modified UT engine, with a few similarities to the version used in Jedi Knight series

edit: actually check thid out:
now you know why the source code wont be releasedThe Refractor Engine, is a game engine designed by Stockholm-based studio Refraction Games, first developed for the computer game Codename Eagle, which was released in November 1999. Since then, Refraction Games was bought by Digital Illusions CE, and working alongside with the Refraction Games team, designed and developed the Refractor 2 Engine for the famous Battlefield game series for the computer.[1] The following list of games uses the Refractor 2 Engine: Battlefield 1942, Battlefield Vietnam, Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142 and Battlefield Heroes.

Re: PR: Bf2 vs BF3
can't really belive that, cause when you would have modded both games you would know that the engines behave very different in many points

Re: PR: Bf2 vs BF3
but they're still the same engine although slightly modified. That they behave differently has nothing to do with it since they have been modded to include other features then the first engine, its much cheaper then making a whole new engine and could(if properly done) make the company a whole load of money.

In an interview I still have in my HDD they talk about Frostbite and the physics engine (only this component) and giving the impression (if I may use that word) that Frostbite was only he physics component (like Havok for example). Nice find though.'[R-CON wrote:GeZe;683051']Actually, it is the name of the engine.

whenever BF3 comes out, if its still about modern warfare (like bf2) and not another crappy BF2142 but with an improved engine, I would love PR to go on it as long as my computer is good enough to run it

But I think the real question is, is PR (Brand New Game) ever gonna be on store ?

Re: PR: Bf2 vs BF3
You have the keep in mind that BFV and BF2142 weren't true "sequels" (hence BF2 was called BF2 and not BF3). BFV was built from BF1942, and BF2142 was built from BF2. So it's not surprising that they didn't have as wide an impact as their predecessors.AirCasper wrote:The battlefield series seems to hit and miss every other release, so I have good hopes for BF3
BF 1942: Hit
BFV: Miss
BF2: Hit
BF 2142: Miss
get my drift.
Please note I am using the term "Miss" VERY VERY loosely
I played BFV and loved it, but not many people switched to it, and you find more people playing BF 1942 today than BFV
same said about BF 2142, good game, quite the fan base, but It didnt bring over the mass numbers of BF2 players like they hoped.
I think BF3 will be epic.
But you are right though. I do believe the next PC installment for the BF franchise will be "epic." I think Bad Company and BF Heroes are being used as a tool to divert attention away from the next PC BF and its development process.

PR is made by the squad system but it is also hugely limited by it. If BF3 squad system is hard coded, no amount of dynamic lightening or destructible environments could persuade me that moving over to BF3 would be worth the gargantuant amount of time and effort required to mod the game in all other areas (except squad system becuase you cant!).
This is based on the "fact" that in BF3 squads sizes are not going to be larger and communication systems are not going to be significantly if atall better than present BF2 system becuase in the BF2v environment there is absolutely no need for it and BF3 is only going to get more arcady (see Bad Company)!
So gents and ladies i suggest you WAKE UP and smell the stench of indifference! !
