There's no point in factionising the factions though as people have already said. I can only see it working in 3 ways;

1 All factions are considered mini-mods, meaning alot of annoying loading between different versions of PR and splitting the community

2 All factions are simply treated as add ons to the core game, most servers will run all the factions so you might as well have...

3 All factions are within the main PR downloads

Obviously 10 gig has twice the download time of 5 if it were to end up that large (I'd hope the mathematics was that simple anyway) but 10 gig isn't much disk space, and isn't that much to wait for a worthwhile game. 6 hours download time or so isn't much to ask for every 6 months for an awesome and FREE game.

It may be true that it will bring trouble but the trouble will be worth it since the pwn-ness of it will make ppl happy..

All of them would be a good size but still, easier to download.
I think this works best.

Though from what I understand the factions themselves aren't too large, it's the maps that would be absurd (Considering there might be 2 to 3 maps a faction).

So I guess you might see something like

Core w/factions
Levels 1
Levels 2
Levels 3

Optional download for community mods, and you get seperate servers.

I think having

CORE
LEVELS
-------
AND FACTIONS + LEVELS as an UPDATE/PATCH, or anythinng that can be used in the base pr without having to close it or anything like that

I don't think there can ever be too many factions. Bring em on! In fact I think it's brilliant that so many factions are in/in the works. Something for everybody which will bring in more players than otherwise. Plus the unusual interesting scenarios which you almost never get in other tactical FPS.

The more the merrier.

If the file is huge spliting it as Soucy suggested would be nice.

Look at EA boosters pack, something similar would happen, only a few people would play them. As someone stated, I think [R-PUB]bosco, the factions them self are small.

Do things download quicker if you split them into seperate files? I know the whole download accelerator/torrent thing works by splitting files, but that's only because it downloads pieces from different connections so you get more bandwidth from a server. At least that's my understanding of it.

It all comes down to files sizes....and if the faction is complete. Keep the ideas about downloading going :-P

seperate downloads for different factions will only split the community and result in lots of CTDs for folks that havent downloaded the right pack.

core + level.

All reports of factions being a large file size are extremely exaggerated.

The Russian Forces is 60MB.

There will be no 5, 10 GB file if they are included. You are looking at just a couple extra 100MB to download.

edit: it's actually 60MB, not 80MB, so, even smaller

... that doesn't include maps, in 3 different layers, does it?

I believe the factions in themselfs are small its the maps who make the biggest space, but more maps more PR ownage. So more factions is like more maps so you can say its more maps with just some new weapons models and assests in a short way to say it.

The "layers" do not affect the file size in any way beyond the extremely minimal. That is not were the file size of a map is. One big contributer to map file size are light maps for instance. It is in such things, not small text files.

As for the Russians, the maps that we would use would be included into PR anyways (but with the US instead of the Russians for instance), it's a non-issue (for the Russians at least).

Well if the download for the factions themselves is that small, then a core+levels shouldn't be too bad.

lots of other things it comes down too as well, like testing, releasing etc, the more factions (epically new) = more testing = more bug fixing = longer overall release :p

ye but that is without maps (apart from maybe stock maps where you are just using the server files) and besides, most of the Russian weapons/vehicles/assets are part of vBF2 which for the most part just require reskins, things like the Canadians would be much bigger where basically they need a whole set of weapons that are not in vBF2.

Lots of new content is wanted to the mod in suggestions and people start yelling "awesome, when is this included!!1111oneoneeleven" when somebody comes up with cool model. It has always been that way. Now when volunteers are working to put up content that doesn't even have any kind of guarantee to make it in the main mod I see people who are saying to split the things up?

We want more maps and we want different experiences so the new factions and maps are the core solution. Every round is different yes but you boys n' girls know what I mean with the previous one. When a mod version comes out you play it for months. If the D/L takes couple hours more that is not so long time to wait. I can see the point of DEVs when it comes to testing and thinking. Quality control and such also take time but I would also see the people who bring the content to participate in developing an idea to complete mod any ways they can.

So what I wanted to say is that don't ***** about getting bored to Qwai and Kashan if you don't have other alternatives to bring out new experiences. Game modes are also good ones but they take time to develop.
