I think I'd rather see a change in the grid instead; supporting more squares, so you can be much more precise (ideal on Kashan or Qinling sized maps).

I dont get how folk can say it'll look cluttered, Road maps manage dont they?
I love the Idea of
Topo Maps
Much better than having a satellite picture of everywhere you go
Topo maps for 0.8?
EDIT: Imagine if you're on a new map like Mestia V2 and all you have is your lil topo map, Not a big aerial picture so you know how everything
looks before you get there but instead a proper idea of where everything
is when you get there... would be sweet having that lil voyage of discovery on new maps

Usefullness factor of labeled streets - 0
I dont think you will be able to say the names anyway, chinese and arabic -_-

If you're SL, and you're gonna open up your map to look at a bloody street name...why not just place the god damn move marker instead of calling out 'meet on the corner of Main and 7th'? It's not hard.

Because I play nothing but squadleader and would be much easier to say "Fall back through De nang road" whilest placing defense and attack markers for supporting and suppressing fire...
and would also help when calling for a heli extraction "meet us in the Zubair Courtyard"
and would be more useful when giving intel to the whole team on enemy troop movements and directing armour fire...
Would also help to call out the locations of mined roads and safe passages...
And when my squad gets divided by an ambush it could come in very useful when under fire to remember the names of streets around you so you can direct troops to your exact location whilest under fire, keeping them out of the line of fire and not needing to bring up the minimap at all
Cant be arsed to continue

Would also save time as opposed to bringing up the map, clicking a spot to place an arrow especially when under fire.
Would also help in giving detailed instructions to a driver "Head down South Main and then take an immediate left on East Main, we'll continue down that road until we come to the intersection between East Main and Alpha Street" Instead of clicking on a map with just "We'll go here, here then there!".
Also... I imagine it's a lot more realistic than a magical arrow guiding you.

Bump....
I am still a firm believer in some sort of standardized system for naming streets on the growing list of urban maps, it would greatly improve communication and would be realistic as troops going into action in an urban enviorment would either use actual names of the streets or use names they created for streets of key importance.
I added streetnames to a map of Muttrah for a scrimmage I was involved in and it worked rather well, all the squad leaders had a paper copy of the map and the communication and teamwork was greatly improved, I PM'd Rhino about using the names on the actual minimap and he was not interested.
I understand Rhino's statements in this thread that the minimap would be too cluttered.. yet this could be worked around where the names only show up on the zoomed in views.. if I am not mistaken these are seperate image files than the overall minimap.
Instead of using the minimap as allready suggested streetsigns would allow players to have standard names for avenues of importance that they could commit to memory.. making a mental map of the city. One trade off with "REALITY" would be that the signs would need to be in a language that could be understood by the PR playerbase.. this is not to say they have to be English names, but they should be written with the a Latin Based alphabet that English French German Icelandic Itallian Spanish and others use.
It would not be neccesary to name every street mind you, avenues of key importance.
Thoughts?

It would be cool if there were some other labels too. To identify other things like mountain ranges, lakes, rivers villages etc. Just general points of interest.
Yes, exactly. IRL the notable features of the landscape gets a code name on the military maps, Hill 152 etc.

I think for majority of maps this would be a under used feature but say Muttrah or al basrah for example, there are alot of streets guiding somone whos not in your squad somewhere can be a difficult task, saying squad 1 i need you go to go Street alpha and cover the turning into street bravo.
Also we would get to say "I've got five terrorists going southeast on Bakalakadaka Street!" ^^

i gotta say this is a great idea. If the writing was small enough i dont think that this would be cluttered if the writing was small enough. Would love to see this in 0.9

yes but that's not marked on the map and can get confusing. A street name isnt confusing it gives a place where people will meet

i like this idea
especially for maps like muttrah, if a squad wants supplies on a rooftop then they can say something like "T-shaped building, northern end of abc st."
though i demand a street to be named 'Zzyzx Rd'

I think the fact that there are no names makes room for individual Commander logics/Staff logics in the tourney, where the game is played to its full extension.
Thus if there where to be deployed names, at least (if possible) make it a free option if to view the map with or without names.

Sounds like a great idea. Would make the map feel less generic
