It's simple. Include an engine facing forward that's mapped to a different key than the S one.

Better yet: include a gun facing forward that you can fire, who's recoil slows you down (take a look at my "jet fuel system" thread in community modding - other way around) like a flap system.

Again, the Reverse Thrust issue, and again, when there's reverse thrust, you can fly the jet backwards, which is why it was removed in PR.

tbh i dont think "this" much detail should be in the jet side of PR. This mod will never be 100% realistic with the aircraft...

I think the limitations of the view distance in battlefield could be overcome with a set of guide-lines that extend from the runway, that only pilots can see, to help with lining up on a runway.

I never really found landing all that difficult. Not that I landed too many times, but every time I tried I had no problems. The trick is to simply drive your jet into the runway at low speed. There's no glideslopes to watch. Your angle of attack is 0 unless you REALLY try to stall the aircraft. Braking feels kinda iffy, but it you touch down at low enough speed you won't run out of the runway. The trick is setting your power correctly and then flying into the runway at a shallow-enough angle. Alignment can be done visually and with the help of the minimap, if you leave yourself enough room on approach. If you want to be all cool you can even fly a pattern around the runway to get a better feel for it.

As to flaps, the physics model for aircraft in game couldn't really handle flaps. Gravity has odd effects on planes in PR, and at low engine thrust they handle really bad, not to mention automagically slow down.

Yeah, Something like an yellow arrow that the squad leader could set on the end of the runway.
oohoh and it should have like the distance to it written underneath the arrow!

Or maybe instructions on the HUD?

I'll stop now.
but seriously, practice makes perfect.
Just practice on a local server a bit (Stay away from the online training servers unless you fancy being rammed by 12 year olds a lot)

and for future reference, I never managed to land the damn F-14 in top gun on the NES.

if the real pilot says it's hard, you guys that know how gotta be proud ;D
i think the difficulty is ok, making only the skilled players why... or wait, the noobs try it too and crash constantly...

last time i landed i got baseraped while rearming. i fucking snapped and haven't flown since

If Instructions can be incorporated into a 1980's Nes game I Deffinatly think its possible to do Something for PR a 10 Times more high tech game :D

You'd think so would you? Anyway with that game the landing thing is clearly an entirely different section of the game, I'm sure you could make a "landing jets" gamemode/mod for BF2 but it wouldn't be all that great. Plus with all the bloody money spent on them you'd think a pilot should know what they're doing when they land of all things. :p

The best piece of advice I got was from the .7/.75 official piloting guide for pr when they explained the absence of the reverse thrust, taxing and braking, basically if you keep your thrust at just over 50% then you'll stay at the same speed as long as it's under somewhere between 800-500 depending on what jet your flying. Always worked for me, come in at about 600-800 and take the throttle from 50% ish right off and apply the brakes last minute, they work pretty well and when you get down to 300-200 you stop very quickly, just don't apply them too early, aswell as potentially taking off if you do it really early if you brake just as they become usable then it makes your jet real hard to control.

When i'm going to land, i tend to keep the power at 38%, then when i'm right infront of the runway, i hold down S. Seems to work for me

That trick doesn't work with all the jets, its different for nearly every jet e.g. the Stalling speed for a Euro is lower than a Su-30...

I just go down to like 49% power level the aircraft and it's slowly losses altitude then once i hit the run way i go full throttle reserve to slow down and it works perfectly for every jet i've flown.

But the fvcking AA need to be toned down because those guns are way to strong.

I'm guessing you haven't flown the Tornado then...

Yeah, i've noticed it only seems to work with the Frogfoot and the A-10.

I haven't had any problems with thats besides my co-pilot blowing me up. (training servers were everything explodes) but same thing appears to it but different power percentage needed.

It's difficult to do. Just can't go in too slow in this game.

Play Flight simulator, then come back. You will then improve your landings, even though they are not similar.

Oh, and use a joystick. :p

^Except for the fact a Grumman Goose handles slightly different to a state-of-the-art fighter, but I get your point. The main issue with BF2 is that the engine treats all the jets like some VTOL Gunship thing from 2142, but without the VTOL i.e. no power=fall+fail.

I usually approach nice and shallow and gently lay the aircraft gently on the runway (Kashan has enough ground for such an approach) I think the important thing to remeber though, is if you think you won't make it, go around and try again -you've got unlimited fuel turned on after all.

Would it be possible to add a (very small) downward thrust effect on jets when the throttle is pulled back below 50%? Not enough to push the aircraft up obviously, just to compensate for the useless wings at low speeds.

I... Actually like that idea, I know the rest of the flight dynamics are built into BF2 but that actually sounds feasible.

I'm a pilot in real life and can't land one in this game. I don't think it helps that much.
