I'm against it.
Unless you do one or two of the following things:
Make them defusable by gunfire/explosions (very important!)
Make them explode if someone actually activates them, by pressing G
Otherwise it's like with the BF2 claymore - you place it on top of a ladder and the only way to ever get up there is to send a guy up who triggers it and dies.
If there is another way to defuse it from range, like with a gun or grenade, I'd have fewer problems. If it was activated by pressing G, I'd be fine with it too.

how would you stop insurgents accidentally picking it up thinking "YAY! I found me a good kit" BOOOOOOOOM!
diffusing with wrench would be good enough for me, not 100% smooth, but engineer....difuse....it works
I also support the G idea, not a proximity mine.

I like the idea but i dont like how you want to do this(the kit thing)This will work just some days after the release after a peroid nobody will pick up a kit anymore especially if its a m82
But its like Solid Knight said basically a anti personal mine. Why dont make a kind of wire trap.
This would be the simplest method. Make a model and make it act like the trip flare just with a longer activation radius.
But this should be just a pickup kit so we dont have the whole map mined.

Nice idea! In real life they cant defend themselves against IED's and I think the Insurgents can really use something like this

I'd give it the shape of a US / UK kit, thats the thing thats most likely going to be picked up, especialy if its a limited kit. But the problem is that it wont take too long for the brits/US to find out that they shouldnt pick up kits with no dead body anywhere near it.
Though, that would be another idea, you could give it the shape of a dead brit with a kit next to him. A medic might revive him and... boom. You could make it so that shooting it makes it detonate, and when the medic uses the epipen, that would trigger it, too.
Problem is: How do you make that body real looking? And how long will it take till' the enemy gets used to it?
Meh... There simply are not enough usable things in BF2... A vehicle maybe... but thats just a suicide car without the suicide then... A stationary weapon... but those are rare, and you know their locations... A .50? A faked sandbag? Mh...

Ok then, I'm pretty I'll get started on this then (after I finish up some business with my Arty IED of course).
Now, about destroying it - I'll try my best to make it so the device can be "repaired" by Engs with the wrench so that it goes away then. The other alternative will be to throw a grenade or other explosive device on the things.
I actually was making a wire trap with a can before, but wire traps don't really work out in PR because people want the trip wire to do so large that the wire is made from like 2cm thick metal, rather than fishing line, like they are supposed to be.

Cant you make gunfire let it explode? It would really be annoying to have that on the end of a ladder and noone can throw a nade high enough. If it worked with gunfire, you would just need to get on a higher building and shoot at it, which would limit the buildings this exploit would work on to the few highest on a map.

Well I'm still hoping that we can make it so the IED is set off by pressing "g." I just need to find somebody that can tell me if that's possible or not.

That would be the best thing of course. But i'm not sure if thats really possible. I mean, it could probably kill the player picking it up, like picking a weapon kills a civilian, but an explosion triggered by picking up the kit...
There could be a work-around by making this "kit" contain nothing but a weapon that always fires as soon as it is selected and shoots a grenade with range 0.

Yeah that would work, but I don't think it's possible to have a weapon that fires before you click. Is it?
Really, I just need to experiment with this some as far as being able to disarm the thing while maintaining the fact that the weapon is set off by a movement in a radius (as that's the only one that I know will work).

Ok, well now I got this figured all out.
See what I did was that the radius is 2 (so an ingame radius of 2m close to the center of the bag, the bag itself is like 1m), but the victim must be traveling at a speed value of at least 2. This way, if you are crawling or crouching (ie. not standard walking or running) you will not set the IED off even if you're in the 2m radius. I'm contimplating making it so even when you crouch you'll set it off, but I don't know.

The idea of a VOIED is that you can't tell the difference.
Also, Engineers can defuse it if they approach while crouching or while prone.
I understand that that some people might get tk'd, but that will be their fault for not reading the manual. Also, I'm sure your cmdr would be glad to stick a "danger mine" symbol over it on the map.
Finally, you can tell the difference, but you must be close to it. So close in fact that you would set it off if you walked that close. People will just need to learn to be cautious, just like real Coalition forces are.
