No. This will make the game extremely boring. In case you haven't noticed, there are times during the game when assaults get quite bloody, with many casualties on both sides. It will make it too difficult for everyone if every time they happen to get killed advancing, they have to start over from main. And you also have the issue of "How are American/NATO tactics compared to Chinese/Mideast tactics?" I'd expect an American squad to be quite careful and try to keep everyone alive, but to be honest, I wouldn't be too surprised if Chinese troops were under orders to win or die trying.

For that you have firebases. If not, then you should not assault but start building them first.
I can see SLs wanting snipers, or even marksmen in their squad to hold way back and stay alive just to keep the rally.
Yeah, I am starting to believe that this will indeed happen. The game mechanism will be that obvious and so easily avoided that it will lead to that kind of gamey situations.
In short, this "Rally Defender" is sounding to be more like a lone wolf player than a squad member. I'm not saying a player shouldn't contribute when necessary, this improvised role just seems very "un-squadish" to me.
The problem is that there will be SLs who will order SMs to hang back. That is not what I had hoped would happen.
Thanks for the discussion.
