Can you believe that the Gateway Fx P7811 was on sale refurbished for 700 only a couple of weeks ago? DAMN!! Now they are reselling them on ebay for 1 grand. It received great reviews!! That new 9800m Gt is about 4 times faster than the older 9600gt. I am really considering getting that laptop refurbished for $1,000 but.....then again I can get an awesome Core i7 desktop starting at 700 plus a nice nvidia Gtx 240 card ($1,100 est.). I really like the idea of gaming anywhere in my apartment or in school.

I'm also very interested in Armed Assault 2 and Operation Flashpoint 2 therefore I want to have a system capable of running those games MAX settings. I don't think the FX laptop will accomplish my desired settings for those soon to be released games.

I just got a new gaming laptop, for the same reason as you. If you can shell out a bit more cash you could get a sager from xoticpc.com . If not here are some options, some just a bit above your price range.

This one seems like you could be happy with it

Look at the dv5t
PLUS

You go here you can get a $50 coupon. And that thing can get a 9300 i believe in it.

You don't need that much of a good PC do that ;)

Everything above 8600GT and HD3850 should have no problems to run PR at all high + 8x AA

And yes, laptops are not good for gaming.
Too much heat, too little space...
Yes, I run my settings on ALL HIGH including AA. It runs fine. Almost no graphics lag at all and I'm also running it on a laptop.

There's no doubt you get more bang for the buck with a desktop.

I have to say... IMHO Vista is the biggest step back Microsoft's made, amongst many :)

Unless you have more than 4 gigs of ram, get xp for sure. Vista uses roughly half of the RAM just to power the OS. Only downfall with XP gaming wise is that if you have more than 2 gigs of ram (or is it 3? I can't remember.), it's treated as "virtual memory" and doesn't actually help performance wise.

Plus Vista's a pain in the @$$, according to all of my sources and from first hand experience.

Well friends I am a proud owner of a refurbished fxp7811.
I bought battlefield 2 installed it. Currently downloading the latest patch because the game was hanging on the loading screen.
I am also downloading project reality levels file but its taking over an hour  is it suppose to take this long?? its downloading from fileshack.
really annoying.

Whoever has the Fx p7811 , what drivers should I use? or what do you recommend? I downloaded some DOXC drivers that were suppose to increase my peformance.

THanks highly grateful.

Congrats, yes PRM files are massive, last I recall about 2 gig, so even with a good connection they take a while. Wait till .85 comes out and all of us are trying to DL it at the same time. Normally that's a 4-6 hour DL for me with the bandwidth slow downs. I keep my FXP up to date with the latest drivers, no problems here, and you're is a little better than mine.

Is this your first Vista machine? If so there is a whole nother thread in Vista and PRM HERE

Can anyone recommend Asus laptops for gaming? I almost bought this one a few days ago, but I heard it was going on sale again soon so it's making me wait:

Asus - Laptop with Intel® Centrino® 2 Processor Technology - Black - G50Vt-X1

I haven't had a gaming laptop before so it's new to me still, but I don't have much space like the OP so paying the little extra works out. Someone told me always keep the thing elevated...even mentioned it would be a good idea to get a cooler underneath.

Bob from what I read, only a few laptops have the 9800m Gt/s which is very good. I would go for that card. This FX is pretty cheap....look on ebay.

PR is too in depth to play for 15 min breaks or whatever. Its a seriously frustrating game sometimes so you really wouldnt enjoy it as much if at a great disadvantage because you dont have a mouse, etc

Its definitly a long sit down kind of game. A cheap desktop is your best option, maybe restrict it to playing out of term time

I have heard of some laptops having upgradable graphics card, no idea which

A cheap Mac?

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

On a more serious note you probably want a dell, and if this game is all you wanna play try to find one on XP, as vista is pretty buggy.

Been playing on Vista for a year now, out of the box it played PRM fine, then I read the Vista optimization threads and it got even better.

Vista dose come with problems but you can fix them if you look around for them I would suggest you pm Deadfast on this forum if you go with vista and start having trouble

I definitely want to be able to play ARMA 2 and Operation Flashpoint 2 at HIGH settings so I need to look for a desktop with good specs. However I know that it is always cheaper to build but I do not know how to and with college/work I do not have the time. So I'm looking around, any suggestions?

Thanks for your help,

I run a alien Ware that I have self upgraded customized I's would have to suggest a dell tho there good cheaper and gave very good customer support they replaced my full Dell Xp5 with only 1 week of its warranty left they could have very easily backed up my order do to shipping and waited out the warranty and tell me my time had ran out they also about a week after I got my dell the power supply that was not under the warranty died but out of good customer services they replaced it and they surely did not have too.

p.s. the parts that needed to be replaced had noting to do with dell 45% of the same type of power supply's had a built in defect that was found after they replaced it.
