I understand this thread but I just have one question that puzzles me. Rhino has been against the Chinook helicopters because of them not be needed am I right? (no offense to him) I am just puzzled as to why the CH-46 Sea Knight idea was shot down but you did not do the same to the Chinook idea/

Since the Chinook is the life line in A-stan, and you can have a large A-stan map without a Chinook. but i could be wrong tho

Eh? I don't get it, if they're not ready for Friday does that mean that .85 isn't gonna come out? What if we win the new engine? Does that mean we have to wait another couple of days while you export everything to a pure unaltered form of the Havok engine?

OMG! What is happeningzzz?!

ehhh no, I was with the Chinook idea if I wasn't it would have not been made :p

The CH-46 Sea Knight is a entirely different story how ever that I've explained many times before thou I'll give it a go again.

As many of you are probably aware, the CH-46 Sea Knight is in the processes of being Phased out of the USMC / US Navy and being replaced by the new V-22, ie, it dose not have much life left in it in the real world. PR is always wanting to crate the most upto date hardware with focusing PR a few years ahead of the real time and there is no point making something that is no longer in service. One example of this many of you may remember the British Saxon that was in v0.4 and a bit in v0.5, ie this thing for thous of you who dont: Project Reality Mod for Battlefield 2 AT105 Saxon - Render image - Mod DB

Soon after finishing it we found our from one of our MAs that the British Army no longer used this and it was being phased out, only place is it still currently used in the British Armed forces today is in the TA, hence why you do not see it ingame as its unrealistic. That and its not upto par with the rest of our models.

Now the next main issue is this, even if we made a CH-46, we have no real maps to use it on. Really you need a 4km map to even think about using a chopper like this on, anything under is really too small with possibly a few minor acceptions to the rule, but all the current USMC maps that are fit for any kind of chopper, Muttrah, Jabal, op barra and qwai river all would not fit one on it. And yes I did not mention Op Archer as that is going to become a Canadian Forces map in the future like it was planned from the start but even that wouldn't fit one on well. There is also no future maps that are currently in development by the team that could use it. Where as the CH-47 Chinook on the other hand has 3 maps, 2 current and one upcoming that could use it (Sangin being the main one, but also Qinling and Kashan could easily use it in there infantry only layers).

So to go though why each map wouldn't work with them:
Muttrah: not enough LZs for a large chopper, map dose fine with the current choppers and transport choppers become less useful the deeper the team get into the city and too small.
Jabal: too small.
Op Barra: not enough LZs for such a chopper and too small.
Qwia River: to small view distance for a black hawk let alone a Sea Knight.

Now onto my final point, I mentioned before the Ch-46 Sea Knight was being replaced by the V-22 in the future. Well as it happens PR has a V-22 model from the RC mod that gave it to us when they shut down. I can not say it is the best model etc ever but its ingame and it works. All it would need for it to be used in PR is really a bunch of coding tweaks etc, so your probably asking now, why do PR not use this? Well the answer to that is simple as its the last one, no maps for it, and where size is a issue for the CH-46 size is a even bigger issue for the V-22 because it has a much higher top speed and it is much bigger meaning LZs are much harder to come by. I mean, its a struggle to land it on the roof of one of thous huge T apartment buildings.

Image

now that shot is from a REALLY big WIP of muttrah where I was looking at the possibility, that was in the 17th of September 2007 according to the dates on the image.

So to recap on it I will list the points as to why we will never make a CH-46 Sea Knight.
  • Being retired so would not be a realistic asset ingame see as PR is for the most part set a few years in the future
  • No current or upcoming maps would even fit it
  • If we did have maps for it, we have a V-22 already made for the job
Hope that explains that...

Right under our noses eh!
Well, I'm not a flyer, so I'm not really dissapointed.

Myself, I thought that 'future' included 0.85, as 0.85 hasn't been released yet and so but, yes, I shall try to read more carefully next time.

Seriously dude, once you've flown the Lynx, you'll love it! The lynx wont be as effective as far as logistical capabilities but with sheer speed and agility, it owns.

 < My face after first flight in the Lynx.
