If we were gonna have whispers I'd prefer it if they were radio ones, I don't really see the need for whispers other then for cross squad comms.
Spearhead;937566']I wonder why no one suggested that we mute everyone transmitting while not having a position in the game world. This is currently the most annoying thing since everyone will hear those guys... Well I suggested it now.
there is an Alt Push to Talk button, I've mapped it to V, so ppl next to me know when I'm talking to the commander

I assumed it was a given. Also, I think it's been talked about in the other mumble thread.

Aye, I thought it was a bit of a given too.

One thing I'd quite like to see as well after playing last night, seeming though people seem to only be using mumble when they feel like it rather then all the time - kinda ruining the risk of communication and the general fun of everything, would be some way of making it the only method of comms. I know it's kinda a lame thing to say, but it does ruin the enjoyment of it with everyone switching to VoIP as soon as an enemy might hear you, plus you can't do any of the uber 1337 spexopz keeping your voice down like in teh moviez.

The only way round this would probably be server and player side, with servers disabling VoIP and everyone turning to mumble instead. Obviously it would have to be a fully viable communication system before you could start working toward that, and you'd get a few Ftards that'd use teamspeak and stuff cos they're too dull to play the game properly, but I think servers disabling VoIP once it's not gonna be a pain in the arse for folk would be good. Besides we can always have the fun of naming and shaming people that won't play ball :p

There is the squad comm problem, but you could probably have a squad level radio layer that's assigned to another button and just do the same as with what I suggested for other radio use and have the voice transmit normally as well as over the radio, so there isn't the same problem as you would have with VoIP anyway.

I think a few of the ideas here might be seen as a bit too hardcore, but I think they reflect the level of realism in other aspects of PR at the moment, so it would seem pretty natural for it to be quite a harsh system.

This brings me to my suggestion, as AnrK says, it is a problem for people, they don't want to be heard by the enemy, so they use Voip, which completely defeats the purpose of Mumble. What we need is people going into seperate channels in game, because think about it, if you are an MEC Chap, even if you heard some Brits talking, you wouldn't understand a word, but as it is now, you could get 1 squad in mumble, saying move here etc etc, some sneaky opfor guy listening, but he shouldn't really be able to understand if we are going with his in game character. However, I think if a grunt(not the SL in the SL channel) uses Force Center, then if possible, everyone should hear, because it's like the radio is being listened to by the enemy, and grunts shouldn't really use it.

As i posted in the other thread, i think seperating the teams in channels would be the best idea untill all these unwanted problems are dealt with. Simply disabling Voip to force them using mumble is not the best idea ive heard today ;)

I wanted this too,
AnRK wrote: you can't do any of the uber 1337 spexopz keeping your voice down like in teh moviez.
that was the main reason :-P

But what I really wanted was to somehow integrate it into the VOIP radio, so if you wanted to talk on the radio, it would still make sound around you. However, my main concern with this is that in real life, you could (and I'm sure would) use hand signals and such means to communicate, if there was a threat of the enemy hearing you.

I fully agree with removing voip capabilities in order to promote the use of mumble.

One of the first nights I played on TG with Mumble there was a complete voip bug. At first, neophites started asking why was voip down, and the few players using Mumble told them the Mumbling alternative. Slowly, the mumble user population grew up to at least 78% of the players on the server and most everyone that had some experience used Mumble because there was no VoIP.
Yeah, there were a few whiners who wanted VoIP back, but then when VoIP came back nobody used Mumble anymore. This proves VoIP defeats the purpose of Mumble.

Disabeling VoIP promotes Mumble effectively. I think servers should try to implement «Mumble nights» where VoIP is off in order to promote the use of Mumble. :)

1) Whispers to...
a) Individual Players
b) Designated Channel Commanders of a specific Channel
c) All Designated Channel Commanders in all Channels
d) All Users in specific Channels

2) Simple User Registration GUI

3) Fix the 1% issue

True to some (albeit likely small) extent for all languages/factions.

That said, I don't like the idea of just being able to listen in on radio/voice. Radio doesn't necessarily make sense, except maybe Coalition listening to insurgs., because most military radios are encrypted, and the people breaking them aren't the ones lugging the guns around. It's simply not an on-the-fly, tactical asset to listen to the enemy's comms. Voice, maybe, but it only makes sense if you would really be able to understand the enemies language.

For example, when I play on the Russian Reality, I can never understand the Russians, but as a Chechen I should probably be able to. Then again, on Al Basrah, I can certainly understand the English that I hear most of the time on the insurgent team, but in reality I probably (as a British grunt, for example) would not speak Arabic to the same level. So I think the easiest method is to keep the two separate, because while it's not an advantage for anyone, it isn't a disadvantage at this point, either.

Even so, PLA knowing English? Then you have to think about what is actually being said, sometimes it's quite complicated, I mean, they would no way be able to hold a conversation, it's way more realistic from the other point, if Mumble is simulating the characters voices, I don't think the Brits and US people know Arabic or Chinese ;)

Guys, even if you don't understand the language, just hearing people talk from a specific direction can be a huge help. You don't need to understand WHAT they are saying, just that they are coming from this direction.

Yeah, but the point being, you understand everything said, but a MEC soldier wouldn't.

hadn't we established that it's probably rather teh american who doesn't have a clue about arabic instead of the arab having no clue about english? just saying ;)

He couldn't speak English well enough to understand orders given or even just a random conversation.

Yeah I forgot about mentioning the solution to that too, basically when me noob, don and ninja were talking about the whole mumble thing the other day we thought that perhaps if there a way you could have a simple scramble effect on the opponents speech, so obviously you can hear that there are enemy but don't have a clue what they are saying. Finding an appropriate way of doing that without making it sound like your enemy are on a high dosage of hallucinogenic drugs may be hard, but there's probably some way of doing it well.

Gonna PM Jamyz and see if he can take a look at all of these so we don't get our hopes up too much...
