nice signature, where did you get that chinook pic from ?
Modelling contest wouldn't work so well I very much doubt, we would have to do something like "you need to model this pistol" then we would end up with 20 pistols, and 19 would have to be thrown away as we can only use one model for a single weapon / vehicle etc... Static Modelling maybe but ehhh, not enough tuts on it to get ppl into it. Besides, there are plenty of speed modelling etc contests on many sites such as Game Artist Forums as you are aware of.

A mapping contest makes much more seance since you can generalize the theme or have no themes or w/e and can end up with loads of good maps that can be possibly used in the mod.

As for my sig, cheers, found the pic ages ago, not sure where just had it on my hdd and decided to make a sig out of it.

Map contest; finally! Wonderfull news

Now is time to reinstall the editor and mod tools back to my PC. There are lot of amazing ideas out there, but people just dont feel motivated enough to build it.

+1 for this.

Got a few ideas for PR maps I've kept in the dark sections of my HDD that I'd love to bring into light.

To keep you from disapointment: I believe the maps should be based on real-life area's with some references in the maps. So not to ask for your idea's but just letting you check wether that is true or not.

na, it isn't 100% necessary to make a map of a real location or w/e, providing the map, looks, feels and plays realistically, then that is really good enough for us, it just can help a lot to make a map look, feel and play realistically by basing it on a real place

Well, it sure does sounds interesting. I made some maps for CoH before (although they were crappy), but I've made a lot of progress ever since. I just need to go through a **** load of tutorials, before anything playable will be made by me. :(

I would be interested I have only scummed the mapping editor, but it all depends on when it will start what theme it will be and so on.

When I was working on Korengal I had taken 3 months off of work. I worked everyday 8+hours. I started Korengal March 08 and didn't complete it until August 2008 (0.8 release). And this was for a 1km map. For a first time mapper I would expect 3-5 months to complete a map working 8 hours a day.

Just some food for thought. Your experience may vary as I'm kinda of a perfectionist sometimes. This is in no way to deter you from trying as having people play on your map is a great thing to experience.

That depends on what you mean by prepare, if you mean time before you start making the map then ehhh, if this comp goes ahead it might be a little sooner than then, but if your talking about how long you have to make the map, will be way over 3 months :)

Hmm this makes me wonder... Would it be possible to make a "Community" map?

As in we got a team of mappers and one of them starts the map (ofc there would be some kind of voting for what kind of map) and has a period of time to work on it and then its being transfered to another mapper who has the same amount of time to work on it and he passes it over to the 3rd mapper (I think you figured out what im trying to say). This could create a interesting style of the map IMO

I've seen a group of mappers doing this for a HL2 and I found it to be very interesting.

Don't get me wrong, but with we had a full year would be wonderful, but someday it has to end.
The length will determine a lot of the Level Design.

Personally I'm not in favor of a theme. If these maps are going to be used, it kinda goes back to what Rhino said about a modeling contest. Who would want 20+ desert maps. A little variety never hurt anyone.
