Earplugs do NOT do the job. Tankers wear what are called "CVC's". It's a helmet with some special pads. And it has a built in silencer I guess you could call it. Whenever something loud fires, it automatically shuts the CVC down for that split second, then regains full hearing when that loud sound is gone.
