I believe with the Tornado its due to the landing gear at the moment is set so the landing gear only go down at something like 500 speed, when you might be coming into land at say 700 (dont quote me on speeds just using them as examples).

So ye the speed the landing gear come down needs to be increased.

I dont think this can be too good on the bombs ;)

That certainly would be a fix to the gears coming out in time for regular landings, I agree! I have blown up in the tornado many times coming in at what I thought was "slow" enough.
What do you think about taking the external views off the harrier to match the rest of the mod? IMO it would make it very hard to VTOL land as you wouldn't know if the ever dependant gear came out while you were low, before gaining altitude. Any comments on the realism the indicator would bring to the mod?

........

There is a reason why the Harrier is only in the training maps (and it really shouldn't be in them...)

You couldn't be more right about it being out of place in the kashan desert trainning. It is made for aircraft carriers. If someone made a carrier trainning map I would hope the Harrier or another type of VTOL bomber made it to the scene. I can see why it isn't already in deploy'd maps... too many bugs. A few of the bugs are with the external views and removing those would go along with the mods realism.
The indicator light realy wouldn't need to be there if the landing gear deployment speed was higher like you were saying... but I would hope that the idea of realism would stem some more feedback on the indicator. It is simple and still adds realism.

**EDIT** The simplest solution would be to only raise the gear deployment speed- I can see that. Just thought the light would be a good thing because there is actually a light in planes to let you know the gear is down/up and also, would remove the external views from the one jet that has it = Harrier. Unless you want to keep them to make it easier to land? I only need the external view to see if the gear is out ATM.**

Landing gear was something I noticed in the bf2 engine and was tickled with the realism the game accomplished. I wasn't pink yet, because I didn't engage it and there was no indication other than switching views to see if it was down on my jet.

No, first of all, it was not made just for carriers, it was made for VTOL, just that one big + bit about VTOL/STOVL is that its very useful for carriers. The RAF uses lots of Harriers and they have no Carriers :p

The reason why its not on any maps other than Kashan Training is the same reason why it has 3rd person views, which is because its not been fully coded....

Correction on my part, Harrier is not made "specificaly" for carriers as everyone hopefully understands. Yet very specifically for VTOL.... Rhino points out the astronomical + it gave the aircraft to be used in carrier duties. Which is what I equate the use for, in this mod, right now and looking into the future. In this release of PR anyone can see the Harrier fits some of the maps. It is slow and agile enough to maneuver in Matturah City now IMO but I am only comparing flying the harrier in one map and playing in the other. Barracuda also, but those are just my opinion. Trust me if someone was willing to dev a map with it in there, I would be knocking down the door to help test it. Maybe even other maps without a carrier...

Now back to the topic of an indicator... A simple thing like this, to me brings the realism to light - with a light. I do not know the bf2 engine coding language, as far I ever investigated it was python- so I can't speculate what would be easier to do: a light, just raise the gear deploy speed, make it manual, w/e. I am familiar with programing and know all of it takes knowledge, work hours and a willingness to accomplish the goal.

So far the points brought to the table are that some type of landing gear indicator would:

1. Help noobs learn how to land and sooner.
2. Help bring another aspect of realism to flying jets in general on Project Reality.
3. Help people VTOL land without changing views in the harrier on kashan trainning in v0.856.
4. Possibly assist the removal of unrealistic external views from an already "unfinished" or "buggy" jet = Harrier. (isn't that helping a solution to something already a WIP?. Hmmm...)

Some possible ways to accomplish this:

1. Make the landing gear manual.
2. Make all or only specific aircraft have an indicator on the HUD (like AIX2's MI-24 Heli).
3. Make another weapons slot showing the "status".
4. Make it both another weapons slot and maunal deployment of landing gear.

Thinking on it further ,I do agee that nothing else would need to be done after just upping the speed at which the gear should come out on most aircraft. That is, I guess, another main point here also. The suggestions are changing with the evolution of this topic, lol.

The indicator thing is just an idea and it solved a few problems that I saw on my end- a player. Adding it to other jets and planes would be awesome... not just the harrier! Having animated landing gear was thrilling already. The indicator would just add to that. To me it would just be an extention of what is already a kick *** realism mod. Agree?
