I agree, I think the commander should be able to mobilize. Right now it feels like PR is trying to make the commander some general 3000 miles from the action, in a static command center calling the shots. I think this should be changed. Why not implement the M1130 CV? Having a mobile stryker command center would make the commanders position more useful, and much more realistic in the battlefield setting.

well how about this. let the commander enter FOB and use that as a like the truck AND make the commander a specialized heli thats serves as a commander out post it would fly really high tho and the CO can take out his binoculars (just like in vietnam) that would be aowsim

If a MCV type thing was used for the commander maybe he could have a limited range *probably not possible* or make his MCV worth a fair amount of tickets, thus promoting the need for the commander to be mobile so as to avoid a hit to the tickets and if its destroyed his commander assets would be temporally unavailable. Just a though :)

You need VOIP and bring up the battlemap and see where you're squads are and what assets they are. Make up strats using all assets, armor, infantry, etc and order the squads based on your strat. Keep a close eye on squads movement and if a situation changes, so does your strat and a new one is required. Think of it more as you playing a game of strategy.

Also a portable DVD player is good also  .

for me its not that commander is boring, its weather or not the team listens and responds to the commander. but commander is boring because out about 10 plays as commander, for me only 2-3 times did the players work with me.

I also thought about that: Smaller Mortar or smoke grenade strikes might be an interesting tactical option. But that need to be balanced with the map and its assets.

Not necessarily. It heavily depends on the server and playing times.

Usually, I have the daily newspaper next to me when I start commanding, but somehow I never had the luck to read a single line. The communication was sometimes so intense that I do not even know who has to be answered first, and, of course, I was often eager to learn about the progress of my team.

To make commanders more playable remove the attack/ move/ build ability from squad leaders. This would encourage more teamwork between squads as the commander would have to constantly be receiving information and attack requests. It would also mean if squads were disobeying a good commanders orders they could be kicked from the server for being 20 miles off course.

If they removed the silly attack markers it would mean if the squad leader spotted someone in the field he could magically place a big beacon above the guys head and people would have to use the compass at the bottom a lot more.

thats a good point. Or at least, the attack markers in the game world should be removed, but it should still appear on the map.

I think in the case of Arty and Mortars the SL should still have control rather than the commander, but a different system for calling it in should be used, like if the SL could have a right click function on his map, so he'd have to try and gauge the distance and location of the target using landmarks etc ^ only works in conjunction with the other suggestion.

JDAM should still be under SL control as well but with a laser.

I can see why and how your thinking, but dont forget that in real life you can walk over to your buddy, point your figer over his shoulder, forcing him to look where you point. Thats the same as putting down an attack marker. Theres tons of stuff that can help you point out where someone is in real-life that we are missing in-game. So we need that marker I'd say.

Bring back satelite picture so the commander can assist via voip only on attacks on important location. One per round and it should cost tickets to use. Still no radar dots, just voip info from "the man in the sky".

Being commander is boring when the team is not organised into specialized squads that fulfills a role and commit to it, e.g transport, attack, defence, spec ops, mechanized, air etc and all work together within a coherent strategy that fits with the general attack plan.

Instead of long wolves (worst case scenario) you often get lone wolf squads that just goes away on their own without communication not working with the whole team. Being a SL without commander takes away alot from the game.

I think like most people have said, many SL's don't follow orders, at least in Pubs.

Why not have a 'punish' button of sorts? It wouldn't do any harm, but any SL that isn't following orders could be shown the red blood screen for a second and a message would appear telling them to follow CO orders.

Not entirely realistic perhaps, but something similar might help SL's to actually do their job.

If you're not on a server full of idiots and you're commanding effectively, there should be plenty of radio chatter coming your way.

Talk to the SLs more and they will talk to you, then you'll become more involved in your teams plan making and not just being guy that accepts squad requests. Get more involved with the SLs if you really want to help your team and win the game.

yeah,

but here's how it goes even with a good team

Sq 1, from com

Sq 1 here

Transport Sq 2 from E4 to G6, they need x2 crates at destination

Sq 1 copies

Roger, Com out

Sq 2 from com

Sq 2 here

Sq 1 is on the way to transport you to G7

Sq 2 Copies

Roger, Com out

Then you sit there for a few minutes twiddling ur thumbs until som1 gives you a contact report

Its a boring position in any case, it a realisitc position. But its dull.

In the 4 matches I've commanded against CATA, there was never a dull moment. :p

TBH I've not commanded any public games for a while.

As for me, I haven't commanded in PR, but in vBF2 I only do it when I have some food nearby :)
