The coughing is handy for triage as said before, and it is good for finding that pesky wounded enemy..

Completely agree.. it's more annoying then realistic. Hindered movement, or some sort of "hobbling" effect would be sweet to see.

lol that made my day. and yeah coughing should be replaced by wheezing and heavy breathing. and screaming, perhaps at X percentage when you first start bleeding it's heavy breathing, then at Y and below it's wheezing then Z and below it's screaming or yelling. hell you can totally use the sound clip from Saving Private Ryan on the beach when the guy's screaming "MAMA!!!!"

perhaps at ahigher amount of health, before you start bleeding, you start grunting in pain? quietly though so only you and the guy 2 meters away can hear. that way you know to get the medic before you fall off the next staircase.

the devs make it as realistic as possible, perhaps the coughing is over done is not correct at all, but its a low priority thing on contrast to bigger bug issues and maps etc. to deal with.
Actually no I have not been shot, but that's not my point. I was stating that he wouldn't know what it's like to be shot. Unless of course, he has been shot.

When shot you could be coughing, puking, screaming, yelling, laughing?, growling, jumping, crying, shooting, saying "I'm hit!", and tons of other things. I'm saying that what happens when shot depends on the person, the place shot, and the environment a person is in.

Coughing is annoying when you aren't badely bleeding. It does tend to start as soon as your hit which in some cases isn't too realistic.

Other note:

Well if they dont cough they will scream and in some cases if they dont think no one knows their hit they will shout out random shit. When your hit badely its like you look in one clear direction and you instantly think your alone. Believe me you'd rather it be simple coughing than hearing in your microphone "Shit im hit, jesus fuckin christ! wheres my leg. Oh my fuckin god my leg is gone!"
