During the cold war western tanks were built for defense (hence heavy weight and lots of Armour) eastern-bloc tanks were built for aggressive offense as the soviet union had far greater numbers than that of NATO so they could afford losses but had the ability to overwhelm (hence lighter for speed whilst having same firepower or a little more)
