My only question is why would the torrent work... but nothing else? makes absolutely no sense.

Simple answer, torrents have hash checks included in the stream. So if your download becomes corrupted then the torrent hash checks it against the tracker every update, and if it has bad information it discards it and redownloads just that bit. You can see in your torrent client where it says hashfails and gives you the MB of discarded data.
I think what Robbi was pointing out was that if you have a bad connection you could be dropping packets, whereas with a torrent that doesn't matter, it could corrupt a FTP download.
