not a bug, the devs put that in to discourage taking enemy kits. i recall seeing a video one of them devs put up about that a while back
about the FOF thing, check the map. it'll only take 2 seconds, look at the guy and quickly estimate where he is in relation to the geography of the map, pull up the map and check if there are friendlies in that area and if so what direction they are headed. it has saved many team mates for me, my squad mates would start shooting at guys in the distance and i would scream "cease fire those are friendlies" after a quick glance at the map

I watch map atleast once in a minute, so i have pretty good idea where we have friendlies. I use Caps lock (? anyway the button where i can see squads and map at the sametime) so i easily see if the friendly squad has casualties and that way we know if there is enemies also. If there is no blue guys near us, i can easily shoot everything that moves. That works well on CQB (even though its easy to recognize the uniform, but u can shoot as relex.) And on long distances, if u are not sure, check map.

lol that would be funny, one army gets to be all gimpy and limps, the other will make massive leaps like a carnival clown thing

i always check their bodyarmor.
if you pay attention to the bodyarmor on the back you can disinguish them (different pattern and slightly different color)

With the exception of Insurgent modes, I can't for the life of me distinguish friend from foe. The LODs at great distances don't give me a clue as to who or what I'm targeting. The only foolproof method ive found, is to wait until they start shooting at ME. Then I just pray that I have a better shot (:
But honestly Ive just been looking for m4a1 and g3a3 LOD models in AAS for the past few days, and that's the only thing that actually works for me. The shades of color on the uniforms between MEC and USA, to me, are almost identical at long range. So could anyone provide some advice? I know it must take a while to get used to, but I'm having absolutely no luck.
Constantly watch map where allies are, then if u see someone in direction where are no allies -> fire!. Thats what i do...

Thanks for all the help. It looks like ill just keep checking the map until I feel more comfortable with what the uniforms look like.

I guess if we took the friendly tags off or delayed the pop up time (which would be great IMO) a lot of people would freak out.
As gassthompson stated, experience.

As arjan said, this is the method you'r supposed to use for long range spotting, you'll get used to it if you pay attention to the details. Also a quick look with the binoculars will work pretty well, if not use the map as everyone said before, ask your SL or someone close to verify it and your good to go.
About the enemy stuff on friendlies, like helmets and such, that's not a bug, it is there on purpose, and I think it's great ^^ got scared sometimes after seeing an "enemy" so close without noticing him, but on the long range you won't see any difference.

I see the difference between players by their faces, uniforms and underuniforms.
cause when you're really far away, all you can see are the underunniforms, which are less detailed, each faction has a differnt colour.
I remember when an insurgent took a US kit and tagged along with my squad for quite a while, then he killed us all.

Just press caps lock and look on your map if you can't tell the difference. You will get used to being able to tell the difference.

MEC are yellowish, US are greyish.
When you have a contact, check your compass, then check your map.
No friendly dots to the east of you? Then that's an enemy, fire away.
Sounds like a hassle I know, but it's a lot faster than standing there staring at them for 20 seconds until they make a move.
Besides, once you get in the habit of checking your map constantly you'll find that you will have a pretty good idea of where all friendly troops are deployed at the moment, and you'll be more confident in identifying troops.
