There's no transition to outskirts and barely any interesting areas to have a firefight, unlike Fallujah which looks much more like Iraq.
I dislike Karbala for the same reasons as Basrah, hoping they're overhauled or replaced someday.
Cramped layout? Are we talking about the same map?
One of the best things about Basrah is that it's two or three maps in one. I think that there is a very good transition between the city, the outlying desert, and the village and marshlands.
Having non-enterable buildings, IMO, is a boon to the map as it really "cuts to the chase", so to speak. You are forced to use urban combat tactics, and not the usual "let's all hide in buildings and take potshots at each other and throw grenades" stuff you find in Fallujah, a map I really don't like.
I think there are plenty of great, interesting places to have firefights, IMO, the whole city is a great place to have a firefight. Heck, you could simply take the village, put it on it's own map, and it would be just as popular, if not more popular than Al Basrah itself.
Besides that, no other map really utilizes every kit and vehicle as much as Basrah does. This is why the merlin was so great.
No other map, IMO, gives as great a variety, is better quality, or is more realistic as Al Basrah.
I mean, I can't think of the last time in another map, my squad has spent 10 minutes simply putting suppressive fire on an enemy position from 300 meters out. I can't think of the last time in another map where a sniper actually was a useful asset to the team. I can think of plenty more examples.
