You're not taking into consideration the fact that any commercial venture WOULD PROBABLY NOT involve the BF2 engine without a proper licensing agreement through EA/DICE.

As long as the content of PR is dependent on the BF2 engine and is a modification , EA/DICE may have property rights to PR but , once it is being developed for another engine , any code that DOESN'T directly access any of the BF2's code/API belongs to the developers.

They have the intellectual property rights for their ideas and any attempt by EA/DICE to duplicate PR in that case could embroil them (EA/DICE) in a plagiarism suite.

Why would they even bother?

Understand that EA have never taken any interest in this mod, despite numerous attempts by the Devs to contact them for support. The most they've ever done afaik is put a pop-up message on vanilla BF2 to advertise the mod.

"I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory. Someday this war's gonna end... "

ah, I don't think you know about PR2 then? They have been working on that for a while with a different engine.
