During 0.8 beta testing, soldiers could only stay so long in the water before bleeding. It was annoying and frustrating, especially if you fell into water and the bank or siding is too steep to climb out, so you would basically be screwed.

It was not implemented.

Wasnt this tested some times ago? whis the result, that the soldiers were dying even if they where in an floatable vehicle like boat or APC?... it would suck big time to die in something like the upcoming AAV7 Amtrac :D

Edit: ah.. ninjad

Basically when you're drowned you're quite screwed, so it matches reality, doesn't it?

I'd say if a dev says it was tested and not implemented, end of conversation
YOu do have to do a balance between realism and gameplay here boys, and I'd say in this case, they did well

Haha, if one considers being drowned as refusing to stand up in water slightly higher than waist deep or having comrades that can build up a firebase in minutes yet unable to pull you out of the water from a two ft ledge... Then yes.

Though I'd say being daft or absurd are a more befitting description for that situation.

no bad idea, we dont have enough options to cross a river as real soldiers do as is.

as for bleeding after a certain time IRL you can use your arms to pull yourself on to a ledge or the shore, in PR if the ledge is just slightly too steep you have no hope.

now this thread also suddenly gave me a new idea, what if there was a weapon that when fired, puts you 2 meters up and 1 meter forward of your current position? only usable when in contact with water or a wall, can only be used once every 10 seconds. to simulate of course climbing. anyone think this would be possible? you would have to switch to it before you jump into the water btw.

Pariel -- Marines utilized hollow tubing to aide them in crossing the canals -- this is far from fording a river in full combat gear.

I'll look when I have some more time, but there pictures of a Marine platoon that walked across a canal, all of whom were covered in mud, clearing houses. There's video of one of them peeling mud off his M16 as well.

Also, key differences between reality and Project Reality:

1) Ability to deploy bridges for both vehicles and infantry
2) Ability to climb up embankments (Korengal Valley is a great example of this. South East side of the stream has 25m long sections where it is impossible to climb up.
3) Water distances: Qwai "river" isn't river sized along most of it's length, it's all of 30m wide, right? The Charles River in Boston is wider than that, and I've swum across it pulling a 120 pound boat. Would it be enjoyable in full kit? No. Would you die? Also no. Now, if there were a current (note, there isn't in Qwai), it would be a different story.

Now, being able to swim places from the carrier is pretty stupid, I agree. But if people are spending their time swimming from the carrier, then there's a high likelihood their team isn't winning the game. And by high, I mean guaranteed. It takes probably 5 minutes to swim to the repair depot, and twice that to swim to the MEC castle. I'm assuming we're talking about Muttrah since I can't think of any other carrier maps in .909.

I don't think anyone is

1) I'll agree here.

2) This is a map issue -- maps can be adapted to accommodate gameplay changes. The ability to remove oneself from the water

3) Here is a list of objects, one is buoyant, the others are not: Boots, Helmet, Armor, Rifle, Boat, Ammunition, Grenades, Cordura. :|

Nobody is proposing that you die as soon as you enter the water -- just a restricted swim time.

I was under the impression you could only swim a certain distance before you started to drown/bleed...I think no matter how much gear you have you should be able to ford yourself short distances, we are taught how to get over water with patrol order (approx 32kg).

At first i was like meh, but now i lean towards limiting swimming. to a few seconds, just to get across a 10m river and thats all. (without sprint)

It means more use of transport, more teamwork needed.

You guys do know that those packs and gear float right? That's swim qual 101 right there. Not sure if you can float with sappi plates in, but flak jackets do float and if you waterproof your pack it can float too. Kevlar helmet too.

hehe i remember on Koregnal i was crossing that stupid bridge with planks missing  ended up in the river and trying to find a near flat surface to get out while my squad was waiting on the other side. Thank god i was a specialist(i really couldnt find a way out except a long swim from the bridge) got me hook out(was able to stand), hooked on to a wall, climbed out, was pretty pleased with my self, than like a headless chicken ran to catch up with my squad over that stupid missing few planks bridge lol to ended up in that shitty river again.

it was so stupid that it was epic :D

Again, I didn't propose that you couldn't stand in any amount of water. You should still be able to ford shallow water (anything below shoulder level) regardless of kit.

Restricted swim time is reasonable.

I seriously doubt Korengal will be redone if swimming is changed, given the few times this has happened in PR history.

And whoever pointed out that more of those objects than you pointed out are buoyant is right. Marines are taught how to turn pretty much all their gear and clothing into something that floats.

Also, whoever said that the guns would clog if you went in the water, suggestion: open the chamber, let the water drain, then fire the weapon. It'll work just fine.

If we're talking limited swim, it should probably be around a minute or more.

Not if you kept the magazine port and muzzle out of the water. If its a stream, hold it over your head.

Yeah but they always seem to be in very deep water when they are swimming so it would be very hard to keep the gun out of the water

Unless it is a M4/M16... you can just shake out the water and fire immediately.

Otherwise the upper receiver blow up. XD

As far as I am concerned, going into water = death.

You cannot be revived, cannot shoot, move slowly...etc.
