Imho useless, and brings unbalance into the game, even now you can play cobra on Muttrah without being shot down, tbh being shot down by AA is complete noobiness, this may happen if you land on one, otherwise impossible. Join that Muttrah 24/7 server and check how pilots over there fly, I saw enough to see that this system works perfectly, if you learn how to use it. And this... this is for ArmA not BF2, maps are to small.

Solid Knight wrote:I spoke a bit too soon. I forgot that when I attempted this a long time ago I found a bit of stupidity in the BF2 engine. You see, the angle of the lock needs to coincide with angle of the camera's rotation otherwise you'd end up looking left or right a bit firing the missile and having it go straight despite having the HUD indicate a lock.
The missile constantly tries to maintain the locks. So if the lock angle is 30 degrees but the camera is at 45 degrees the HUD will lock, the missile will fire, but since its out of range of the missile's lock angle the lock is instantly broken and the missile looks for another target.
You're screwed either way. Making the lock angle work with the camera means the missile will be highly spammable. Making the lock angle narrower to avoid the above problems gives it a high chance of hitting nothing or makes it confusing to the user. None of these are desirable.
This is the kind of **** that caused me to settle on the TV missiles used in Combined Arms.
Suppose you don't link the spawning of missiles to a specific point on the helicopter, and instead have the spawn point of the missiles rotate with the HUD to fix this issue?

he was using the TOW as an example as the tow is only effective to as far as (under 4K in RL) you can see ingame as is the hellfire ingame where as the hellfire can be fired onto targets that are BVR as far as 8k away, I am sure most people that play PR and elektro knows the diff between a tow and a hellfire...

I dont have certain knowledge on this, but about 110% sure that is not correct and missile can fly through whole map.
No, the hellfire can only get a max of 1100-1200m in pr, strangely short compared to almost any other munition, while it should be one of the longest.

The Hellfire as a start should just get about the same range as the cannon, seeing as how in real life the cannon is a very short range weapon.

your saying 4 clicks is not very far? as 4000m is the max range iirc

Max range doesn't factor in accuracy. Effective range is more like 2 kilometers.

You could launch them from an invisible rotational bundle which would probably solve that issue.

yeah the effective range where its most accurate is 1500 meters max effective range is probably like you said around 2 clicks
and to jonny, The hellfire in game may aswell be a tow there operated exactly the same...

The Hellfire in game is pretty much wire guided. If you want to do a test to prove it, get in SP, and get a friend to pilot an attack helo for you. Aim at a target, and fire. Then have him ascend or descend quickly.
There's LT Hellfires though.

I meant that the ingame

In PR the range is about 1 KM, I think.
It's definitely not possible for Hellfires to do BVR LOAL right now, I know this from personal testing about from .874.

Back to the thread:
I assume nobody has the means to test out the possibility of a BVR hellfire lock except for EEF (given the lack of reported attempts at testing)? Give me a few days to get back home, get a new PC, and get everything installed again and I'll see what we can do.
I remember doing a few ballistics tests on our server in regards to helicopter munitions.
Hydras are able to bvr but I cant remember how well the hellfire did but I think it worked to a limited capability, not across the whole map. I'll have a look today when I wake up and post the ~ ranges.
Edit: the other thing that we have to take into account is height. This will also effect how close you will get to the laze before it gets swallowed up by the magic black hole.
