The mini-guns are controlled by the pilot in real life. Not the aiming but the pilots have the "on" switch, at least for Blackhawks. Since mini-guns are electrical, the pilot has the control of whether they are "online" or not.
And as for you people that say to just type out "Stop shooting," the people spamming the door guns rarely listen to you and then the ammo is being taken up and your position is being given away. Plus it royally pisses me off while I fly to have the guns going pew pew pew.
