I have a 5850 and and I7-930 and I haven't encountered any dust/smoke related lag. I think the 930 is more than enough at stock clock because I have OC'ed to 3.8ghz and I don't notice a major improvement in FPS vs. Stock.

I just would like to point out that since i3 intel processors are equipped with hyper-threading capabilty. Ofcourse your mainboard needs to support that but it is great for programs which are not optimized for multi-core use (e.g. BF2). So instead of using just one core BF2 will actually use multiple cores due to hardware-sided multi core optimization.
I am using an i7-920 and BF2 is running great CPU-wise. Using my G15 display I can see how multiple cores are used for BF2 which makes me believe is a huge advantage.

So this might be an explaination why OCing doesn't show a difference. Because if you are using hyper-threading chances are BF2 is already running at peak efficiency CPU-wise. Overclocking would only decrease the load on the cores instead of increasing BF2's performance. At least that's how i see it.

Are you running max settings? What are the clocks on your 5850?
