im not a solider but i've heard the sound plenty of times... if you are on the line of fire you will hear the crack even if it passes 15 meters to the side your head... especially on urban enviroments the sound bounces on everything
here is an realife example with grenade blasts too.

The NZ army doesn't have automated ranges. So we used to go down the butts (the end of the range) and hold the targets up. However, you stand in a fortified ditch out of line of fire obviously, and proceed to hold the targets up on wooden poles and waggle the target if it is connected with etc. So after having shit loads of 5.56 and 7.62 shot above my head, I can confirm that is very similar to a whip crack, but quite a bit louder. And depending on how far off the shooter is, the report of the rifle is heard either almost simultaneously (close), or as a thump a few moments later (far). Therefore, this disparity between crack and thump can tell you generally how far off the shooter is. Richochets do cause the bullet to whiz and whur sometimes.

Hey, copy that!
So all bullet cracks are just "cracks", no whiz whatsoever. Roger roger. Really helpful, thanks!
Jay I guess them PR cracks need some work?

Less whizz more crack.
@Fockzhound - dude thats some poor *** army, hhahahaha.
But perfect for recording sound cracks.

Do you mind doing that for me maybe? Maybe one of your friends has a sound recorder (not mp3 player or laptop) - I would really appreciate some 556 and 762 cracks.
Thanks in advance!

Note, not all bullets would produce a crack - i.e. those being sub-sonic, as an earlier poster mentioned. I've never had sub-sonic bullets going over my head, as the range was only out to about 600m. I would suggest that sub-sonic bullets have a loud hissing sound (e.g. the sound of a .22 LR sub-sonic bullet).
I won't be able to get you some recordings though mate, as I'm not in our broke *** army any longer, got out a few years back.

Can't be replicated properly in BF2 without causing severe bugs. I've spent entire weeks trying...believe me.
Bollocks you're not trying hard enough

I thought it was the case that if bullets are very close to your head they make a whizz sound, and if they're a bit further away they make the characteristic crack. I suppose I got that impression from documentaries where you hear both whizz sounds when they're very close and crack sounds when they're further away - I remember an American documentary where one of them comments that they could only hear whizz sounds, implying the rounds didn't make a crack sound because they were accurate and hence passed close to the persons head. I can't think of an explanation of why this would be the case, and since my knowledge is based on inaccurate sound recording on documentaries I wouldn't be surprised if I had come to the wrong conclusions.

The pits :O . Always the worst part, but at least you get shade and a chance to eat/chill, especially on slow fires. I actually have some videos of me sitting in there, I was trying to capture all the cracks, but it's from a cell phone and it kinda blows. I'll post it if anyone is interested anyway

I hate working at the pits too... Our range officers are right ******** when it comes to manning the targets - even on a slow shoot. Middle of summer, got to keep your combat shirt on with sleeves down... pile of balls that is.
But back on topic, to me, the gunshot itself sounds a little more like a thump when you're being shot at, but when it hits, it is pretty much akin to a whip cracking. And like its been mentioned before, it sounds quietest when you're shooting the thing, all you can really hear is the mechanism cycling and a similar kind of thumping sound like when you're down at the butts.
