Silly question. After downloading the retail version from above and backing up Bf2.exe, then extracting the retail version, how do I overwrite Bf2.exe in the steam directory? :o ops:

Hi jack,

backup your original bf2.exe by renaming it bf2.exe.bak or somesuch
download the retail bf2.exe
copy the retail bf2.exe
got to the installation folder in steam, and paste it,
you will get dialogue box asking if you want to overwite, copy and rename, or cancel action, select overwrite.

IF for some reason you did this wrong, you might end up with bf2(1).exe, you can just rename it bf2.exe

regards,

First download the above link, save the file somewhere you can remember, such as to your desktop.
Browse to: <install directory>\Steam\steamapps\common\Battlefield 2
(<install directory> being whereever you installed Steam to, could be C:\Program Files for example)
Steam installs to the following folder by default:

C:\Program Files\Steam

Files for games installed on Steam are stored in the following folder:

C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Battlefield 2

It might not be that exact location, but it should be close.

If you can't find your steam install folder, right click on the steam.exe that is located on your desktop, select properties, and then click 'find file's location'

In this directory:

Copy and paste "bf2.exe" to another location to back it up, preferably in your Documents folder

Go back to your desktop and open the downloaded file,

and extract the bf2.exe out of the newly downloaded .zip file. You can extract it to your desktop then copy it to C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Battlefield 2,
or directly extract it to the C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Battlefield 2 directory.
Make sure you start vanilla BF2 once, log in, and join a multiplayer server so the game writes some player profile files required for PR. Adjust any video settings and audio settings in Vanilla BF2.
exit vanilla BF2.
Start the PR shortcut on your desktop.
You should be able to join any server now.

Let us know how it works.

I Just tried following the instructions with replacing the steam bf2.exe with the retail and I'm not too sure if Im doing it right or what? When I extracted the file and tried to copy and paste it in to the installer file to replace the steam version it just starts loading the game and doesnt give me the option to replace the bf2.exe

Also I copy and pasted the retail version to my desktop so I can move it and when I click it it gives me an error message that reads "The program cant start because Memory.dll is missing from your computer."

Go to /Progam files/Steam/steamapps/yoursteamname/Battlefield 2/ and place the retail exe in that folder.

Run BF2 from its shortcut and create/edit profile, make sure it works properly then proceed with installing/running PR mod.

Is this still needed for current PR version? If so, this thread should be "stickied"...
